Perhaps there is something that happened in 1984-1985 that we don't know about. Given the release of Mr. Bad Guy, it definitely seemed like Freddie was getting ready to go out on his own before Live Aid.
The mostly confirmed rumor is that they were going to break up after "The Works" had no impact in the US charts, but somehow they never got around actually doing it.

In any case, Freddie really wanted to go solo and said that he tried to replicate Queen's sound/quality with his album, but he fell short and it underperformed in the charts. Several songs in it, maybe half of them, started life as Queen songs and he even got Brian involved with "She Blows Hot And Cold", but Freddie alone could never be as grand as Queen and it was a reality check for him.

He still did his other solo projects in their hiatus after the Magic tour but surely he always knew they were better off together for whatever long he had left.

Freddie's first couple of singles did perfectly well, charting in the top 10 or thereabouts. What put paid to his solo career was the success of Live Aid. He released Made In Heaven single at the same time and it didn't get in the top 50 yet Queen albums released years earlier were recharting. People saw Freddie as the singer of Queen and all they wanted was Queen, Queen, Queen.

people are talking like they know what their talking about....we will never know if Freddie was planning on leaving Queen. They Just released a pretty successful album in The Works, then the following year was Live Aid. By the way, Mr. Bad Guy sounds nothing like Queen. Do you really think Let's Turn It On, Living On My Own, I was Born To love You, My Love Is Dangerous sounds anything like Queen? That's why he thanked Brian, Roger and John for staying out of it. The only solo album that Intentionally trys to sound like Queen Is Back To The Light.

Ooops! I thought I was just stating the obvious from the various bits and pieces we've heard and read over the years. The break-up rumors that would have happened before Live Aid are substantiated from many sources consistently. Peter Hince did say this:
Live Aid, in 1985, was a defining moment in Queen’s career. What do you remember most of that day?

“Well, at first they weren’t keen to do it. There were serious problems within the band at that time. I think it’s quite likely they would have broken up because (1984 album) The Works hadn’t done anything in America, they didn’t tour it there. And Fred was doing his solo stuff. So Live Aid galvanised them. It was a watershed for the band. They got the audience at the right time with the right songs. Maybe they felt they had something to prove. When they came off, you really felt – and they felt – that they’d stolen the show. Elton said that to them afterwards: “You fuckers!”
At this point we know there was a bit more than "quite likely" around that time, but some fans may not believe it.

Anyway, I'd swear Freddie himself mentioned at some point that he couldn't be as successful as Queen on his own, particularly some time after Mr. Bad Guy and that it was one of the reasons to rekindle the band's collective relationship, but my memory could be playing tricks on me, so feel free to debunk my words.

years later, Brian said there was rumors of Queen breaking up in the early to mid 80's. But those rumors wern't true, they needed a break from each other. They did have problems like every band, but a break up? The Works/live Aid/Magic In a two year period. That's some break up....Roger also stated, "while they lost their popularity in the states they hardly noticed. The rest of the world we were on top, and creating some of our biggest hits". I think live Aid was Important for them as a band...A watershed moment, but In my opinion wasn't the reason they stayed together. The Movie has to have drama, so of course it will have Queen falling apart and then Live Aid brings them back. Nevermind The Works was a pretty popular album.

Re:

>>The film traces the meteoric rise of the band through their iconic songs and revolutionary sound. They reach unparalleled success, but in an unexpected turn Freddie, surrounded by darker influences, shuns Queen in pursuit of his solo career. Having suffered greatly without the collaboration of Queen, Freddie manages to reunite with his bandmates just in time for Live Aid. While bravely facing a recent AIDS diagnosis, Freddie leads the band in one of the greatest performances in the history of rock music. Queen cements a legacy that continues to inspire outsiders, dreamers and music lovers to this day.

What a load of utter bollocks.

Revolutionary sound? What revolution? Vocals, guitar, drums and bass had been done a billion times by 1971. Les Paul invented multi-tracking, not Brian May or Queen.

Unparallelled? Now Queen is bigger than The Beatles and countless other bands or artists........

Shunned? Incorrect. Chose to pursue a different avenue fearing burn-out and stasis.

1984 / '85 AIDS diagnosis?

"inspire outsiders, dreamers"? FFS - old Brooksy is just a few key stokes from name-checking himself.

They're just trying to big the film up. Maybe they should call it There's A Rhino Loose Somewhere Out In The Sticks Where No Sod Lives.

I want the story to be accurate, but at the end of the day, I just want a good film. May and Taylor were involved in the production, and considering how supportive they have been of the final product, I would be surprised if the film wasn't good. It might not be accurate, but I would rather have a well made film than a meticulously accurate one. So long as it captures the essence of Queen. Let's wait until it premieres, then we can really have this discussion.
