There are some bits where it's nearly by his chin
Note: Audience obviously VERY un-1985
They should've just called the film 'Queen - Live Aid'. It's so heavily weighed on that to make it just a film about 'Queen' or Freddie is inaccurate.
Band leave the stage as DSMN starts
Real pictures over closing titles
OK so that's it. Massively flawed and weighed too heavily on Live Aid. Perhaps unavoidably.
Would've been so much better if it was an unofficial film.
As it is, looking back right now, my fandom of Queen is reduced significantly and I will need to try to remember why I liked them and not let this film cloud my love for the band.
6/10 from me, loses points for being a MASSIVE own goal by the band.
Roll on Bohemian Rhapsody 2
!!!!
Thanks for reading.
Great thread! Terrible film.
Freddie's mum was excellent casting.
They managed to change John's hair while keeping Roger stuck in 1975.
Prenter had a bigger screen time then all three band members combined...
Conclusion after reflection:
Had the same quality of a TV series. And in all honesty should probably have been made as a 5 part 30 minutes thing. Perfect for Christmas schedules.
The timing was very erratic. Again the serialisation would've worked this out - a recap starting every part. Part one ends with the first TOTPs - by the second one they are doing Bo Rhap and it's explained they have done 3 albums and lots of touring by then. It jumped to that with little evidence of struggle / time passing.
The best bits were better than I'd hoped but they were extremely rare. Above the section where it goes like Trainspotting or Velvet Goldmine with headlines flying across the scene should've been more common in the film. Made it more cartoony to exaggerate effect. Like the second part of Day Of Our Lives when it goes all Flash Gordon and had 'the story so far'. It would've worked in the film. It was a fantasy rather than a documentary so should've been pushed to the Nth degree. A mad dream where Freddie is in Rhye with the fairies? FILM IT!!!!
For a film obviously targeting the general public it assumed they'd know more than they probably did.
..which is a problem because then it is no better than the bad media they are always answering back against.
Saying how amazing Freddie is / was and how guarded they were to protect him, and then to be compliant in THIS is a disgrace.
BRIAN - FUCK YOU and your boohooing Scandal shit.
ROGER - FUCK YOU and your boohooing Mr Murdoch shit.
I had to put up with this shit since school defending you lot to haters and now you cash in on it.
calm down is not that bad
It'll be an interesting one to fan edit.
The film is not soooo bad. as a low budget fan film The context as an officially sanctioned document is hateful.
I have really enjoyed the Queen concerts with Paul and Adam, and will go to see any future shows they do. I love Brian and Roger. And Brian has done so well stepping in as the real front man of those shows. I passed on seeing the WWRY musical because it didn’t seem like something I would really like - not my style, although I love plays and musicals. But this movie was to me like the excitement I felt about Queen when Freddie’s talent was still the focus, when he was still alive. I’m 56 so I was a teen in the 70’s. Emotionally, for me, the movie was very intense, feelings I haven’t had since when Freddie was alive. I know this forum is 99 percent guys who like to talk timelines, details of all sorts, but I wonder about the emotional response to this movie. To me it is their closest “Queen feeling” project post Freddie’s death.
I enjoyed this commentary, by the way. Funny!
