I've always found the 1988 fan club party a lost opportunity for Freddie to sing a couple of songs and say goodbye to his most loyal fans. But of course it's easy to look back now at how the events unfolded and pick a date.

1988 would've been premature; He wouldn't have known he was going to die. Plus it would've given the game away.

If these rumoured post-Magic-Tour dates were mooted I wonder at what stage they would've been pulled.

And in 1986/7 it would, like in 1988, have been premature.

I wouldn't say that December 1988 would be premature. I'm sure Freddie had at that point some doubts about whether he would survive the disease. Hell, some people even make claims that he suspected during the Magic Tour that it would be his last. I'm not saying that it should have been something large with people crying and speeches, but if 3/4 of Queen were already on stage in London for a few songs, why could Freddie not have joined them?
