Awesome post JT, How was your weekend ?I saw a few pics.
Rainbow, I have listened to a bit of the Spike Edney podcast and will give it another go later. I got to the sections where he is talking about ways the band signaled to each other while performing. I've watched so many videos over and over that now I like to look at them in finer detail and he gave some information on what I might want to watch for. Of course I've seen the obvious looks and nods, but I'd like to watch more now. Gives me a good excuse to be looking at videos when I should be doing something else.
Since you listened to the whole podcast Rainbow, does he talk a lot about Freddie or am I going to have to sift through a lot of other info?
Katydyd, JB & Rainbow, we saw "WWRY" over the past weekend in Canada and enjoyed it. It was energetic and entertaining. The all-Canadian cast was tremendously talented. It was visually spectacular, and I liked the bright colors. JB, it's the same NA Tour that recently completed the U.S. portion of the tour. Katy, yes, we were on our feet for the 2nd half, esp. during "We Are the Champions," waving our arms from side to side. "WWRY" wasn't as good as "Come From Away," but I'm glad I saw it. My oldest niece had joined us, too. I was proud that as a Gen Z, she could ID all of the Queen songs in "WWRY," except for maybe a couple. I had taken her to see "Bo Rhap" last Nov. 2018. She has since become a Queen fan. It was a special night for her, too, because it was the 1st time she drank alcohol legally. I'm glad it was around family v. friends. The drinking age is 19 in the province of Ontario, whereas it's 21 in her home state in the U.S. She was allowed one Madras (OJ, cranberry juice and vodka). She takes after her aunt, 100% fruit juice(s) + vodka, practically a healthy beverage! LOL
BTW, anybody else see the loose parallel between the "WWRY" storyline and the Canadian band Rush's "2112," as in "We are the Priests of the Temples of Syrinx" for iPlanet?
I deleted the double post.
Thanks for your review Jo, I was curious to hear what you thought. Now that you've seen it I will say that I wasn't quite as thrilled with it as I hoped I would be. The music was wonderful, of course, and the singers had fantastic big voices. But I thought the storyline was a little bit dated/hokey. I'm not familiar with 2112 but I'm assuming it takes place far in the future too? The first act was just ok. However, things really came alive in the second act and I loved that. Part of the problem may be that my city is very conservative, so though there were people wearing Freddie attire, the audience sat politely through the first act though they did applaud with real enthusiasm. Everything changed in the second act. People started singing along and waving their arms, and pounding the rhythm to WWRY. There was a marked change in audience participation. By the end everyone was on their feet with many dancing in the aisles. I'm really glad I saw it because it was definitely on my Freddie bucket list. I went with a friend who is also a Queen fan, though not as obsessed as I am and she had the same reaction as I did. I would definitely encourage any Queen fan to go if they get the chance. The music alone is worth it.
Rainbow, I bet that museum is pretty cool at least they have a place to go see things and pay respects wonderful thing that's happening there.
Katydyd....Yes, you will have to do some sifting! Spike has had quite a long musical career, working as a keyboardist and "Music Director" for many bands. Of course, I was most interested in the parts that pertained to Queen/Freddie, but I enjoyed other sections as well.
(I did some of the "sifting" for everyone...I think these times are correct.)
1) At: 00:16:40 - 00:20:50 he talks about Radio Ga Ga and also about using visual cues.
2) At: 00:36:12 - 00:37:50 he talks about Live Aid.
3) At: 00:46:40 - 00:48:40 more Live Aid.
4) At: 01:03:00 - 01:11:00 he talks about both Freddie and John.
Jo T and Katydyd....Thanks for your reviews of WWRY. It sounds like you had similar experiences and thoughts about the show. As wildly enthusiastic as I am about anything pertaining to Queen/Freddie, I do not feel any big tug to see this production.
Jo T...Sounds like you are doing your part in making sure the younger generation knows about Queen/Freddie. Kudos to you! As for Rush...my husband is a big fan and has seen them in concert, whereas I could not tell you even one song they have done. (Sorry Rush fans)
Katydyd...So were you one of the people dancing in the aisles by the end of the show? :)
Chevy...Yes, I agree, it's nice that they built the museum in Zanzibar. After it has been open for a year, I would love to find out if the majority of visitors to the museum were locals or tourists...maybe it will be a mixture of both?
Katydyd, you're correct. The storyline for "WWRY" IS outdated! Even my astute 19-year-old niece had commented on it, as her only complaint. She really liked the music though. Rush's "2112" came out in 1976, but I wasn't a fan of the band till the late '80s/early '90s as a student. I believe the musical "WWRY" began in 2001, almost 20 years ago. If you go on YouTube, you can play Rush "2112." I'm not certain if you'll like the 20-mins. song. It's hard rock and heavy metal, but you can hear the similarity in concept between "2112" and the musical "WWRY," about a dystopian future where individuality, creativity, free thought and music are banned till a rebel uncovers a guitar, an ancient instrument.
Hello everybody! I wanna say hi to Thor too haven't said hello in a while so here it goes hi Thor.Yes this is a personal HELLO and how are you?
Rainbow, thanks for taking the time to sift out the times that might be of interest. I still haven't gotten back to the podcast, but you've made it easier. I take it that Spike doesn't spend much time talking about Freddie.
Hi ! I’m new (actually not very new as I read this tread since a long time but I’ve never written anything ) ! It’s just to say hello to Thor and ask you Thor if you have received the emails about the adresses ? Because I don’t know if I did the right things... I hope the creation of the book is processing well :)
And can someone send me the link of spike’s documentary? Or the video you were talking about where he didn’t speak that much about Freddie and all ???
Welcome maudtv!! Glad you joined in!! So much knowledge and great conversations here.
Here s the link posted by Katydyd5 F you look a little further up on this page, Rainbow posted the time-stops for various topics. (Thanks for that rainbow!)
Katy, I probably got as far as you did. Really interesting, just need to be in the car longer. Haha. Can’t wait to hear the rest.

This is a link to a podcast featuring Spike Edney. It's rather long and I only listened to about twenty minutes. I don't do well with straight audio, I seem to need pictures to stay interested. I thought I'd share it for those with a better attention span than I have. I tried to make it a live link but didn't succeed for some reason.
