Maybe one of the reasons for his needling attitude to Brian is the film. He seemed to know a lot about the film's troubled history and succession of directors and screenwriters. Perhaps Peter was involved as an early consultant on the script and got bumped when Brian wanted a more family friendly, Queen friendly movie.

I think his comments are good humoured in that British way that so often gets confused for hatred by the young / non-native speaker. He self deprecates. It would be easy for him to say I knew they'd be huge but he admits he just didn't think they'd stand a chance and underplayed his qualifications for the job. He's OK.

I read his book and I must've totally missed the Bowie connection / Ground Control / Robin Mayhew. It's funny that at the start they are talking at crossed purposes about the final 'Ziggy' Hammersmith gig. Mayhew sells an undoctored soundboard of it on his site, but the heavily fixed and overdubbed official release is obviously all the interviewer has heard. Little trivia there for you.

Disappointing that they didn’t contact the old road crew if they were wanting period accuracy as they claimed....Roger even said on camera on the backstage footage at the Live Aid filming that they should contact his old roadie to get the kit set up right.[/QUOTE]

Indeed! And the whole QP camp said: " The amount of details is astonishing. The work and effort put into this movie to get it right is above our dreams and expectations."
You made us laugh, you made us cry, you made us feel like we could fly!

Great listen. I agree about the Brian statements. No love lost there.

Or not. Brian has referred to Hince as a disgruntled ex-roadie with a warped view, and didn't want anyone promoting his book. At this point, most people would struggle to be good humoured about the guy with the fragile ego.

Did Hince's book say anthing bad about Brian?

Only that he was a young man when Brian's solos started...

Hince’s book was a refreshing read....nothing bitchy or sensationalist at all...(and I’m sure he would have some stuff like that); it wasn’t a Queen book ‘per say’ but his autobiography of his time as a roadie; his view of that life is an engaging read, and Queen were a large (but not the only) part of that. The way Brian reacted to it was way out of proportion to the book contents, and totally unwarranted - I can only assume he was having a very bad day when he wrote those comments.

I don't think the Brian / Peter dispute is about the book (unless it was because he went outside the agreed Queen approval process to write and publish it), I think it's more about Peter's sustained criticism of the post
Freddie legacy and due to Peters obvious loyalty to John Deacon who has been largely written out.

When I saw Freddie Mack's (Reinhold's son) review of the borhap film on Facebook, I got similar vibes, especially in his replies to comments about his posting.

I'm interested by the comment that he was the "head of the road crew by 25," because to my understanding that was never a thing for Ratty? Of the three personals, Crystal would have been the one closest to claiming a "head of the crew" status, by virtue of where he ended up by the Magic Tour, but even then the real head would have been Gerry Stickells.

Any merit to that statement, or did Ratty just consider himself the "boss" between him, Crystal and Jobby because he was Freddie's roadie?

A touring crew are answerable to the Stage Manager, in Queen's case it was a guy called Rick O'Brien. It is the stage manager who is responsible for getting the equipment set up and the band on stage. He is answerable to the tour manager (Gerry Stickells, back then) who's job was to co ordinate travel, venues hotels etc.

Within a touring crew there are departments, sound, lights, set/stage, rigging, video ( not applicable to Queen in the 70's and 80's) catering, wardrobe and backline. Every department has a senior or head member. Ratty was a member of the backline crew and at 25 yes he was head of that department. Crystal ( Roger's tech) went on to become the band's personal assistant
