As you just pointed out he did It's Late good but then started the high wails, that's not because he can't sustain notes or to mask any shortcomings it's because as he gets more familiar with the song and doesn't have to think about it as much he reverts to his usual way of singing which is throwing in high wails, he enjoys singing like that but he's proved he can sing without it lots of times, it's a choice not because he has a problem with singing other ways. If you've watched enough of his live singing including his own music you'll notice he starts off singing the songs pretty tame and true to the original and as he gets further into a tour he changes them up, I assume he gets bored doing them the same way over and over and likes to play around.
