Pittrek, I think London was filmed by DoRo in 1987[/QUOTE]

Thanks for the info. Weird that they decided to do it in black and white

I think it was to try and make it look like 70's footage, to fit with the voice over, other than that one bus there is nothing that really gives away that it's 'modern'.... Then we cut to actual black and white 70's interviews.

It's DoRo being DoRo and faking what they don't have.

I assume that Chin or anybody else don't want to colorize the black and white portions, right? :-)

I’ve no idea where to even begin with that kinda restoration, otherwise I would haha.

It can be done (e.g. in DaVinci Resolve), but it's REALLY time consuming - you basically need to "split" the image to areas (using animated masks) which will have the same colour, but you have to select the color manually. But as I said it can take a really long time, you have to adjust the mask pretty often. I might do it when we get on quarantine, which our government is threatening us with

Back in the 80's, when colorizing things like Laurel and Hardy shorts were the in thing, they used to do it by Fame by fame, but in very low resolution and only 12 frames per second. Basically painting the colour on to each frame, in a paint programme.
Which is why they didn't use a very wide palette of colours, as each shade had to be the same from on frame to the next.

Now it's done as Pittrek says, animated masks over each item you want to be a certain colour, it's still very time consuming and if your general rotoscoping ability sucks as much as mine does it looks awful.

Fantastic coverage of a lot of unseen footage. The film quality of some parts is really clear. I’ll leave the technical commentary to those with more experience. I’m sure everyone will enjoy it when it’s done. Excellent work to Chinwonder and those assisting!!

Thank you everyone for your kind words, really means a lot. But I now have another couple of clips that I need opinions on. These clips all come from the Champions Of The World 1995 Documentary of New York by the looks of things, and I need to know... 1. Do they come from the Bob Harris footage? 2. Do they come from DoRo's footage (which was stated in the last page, that those London clips come from them). 3. Or are they just stock footage clips. -Chin

I'm not sure you'll ever find out with those short clips if it's stock footage or not, or a mix of stuff shot in a car and stock footage.
I would say it's just 80's stock footage, the only thing i can see for you to date the era is the Taxi, it looks to be a Chevrolet Caprice, and it's carrying advertising on the top. If you can find out when the make of car was first used as a taxi (Rather than the checkered patterned cabs) and when advertising was first introduced on New York taxicabs it might help you narrow it down.

It may well be stock footage.

Either way, it's very fragmentary and ultimately unrelated footage. The final product won't be any less great without these bits, methinks.

I finally managed to watch the V2. I love it. The intro is lovely. The WATC video shooting seems very authentic with the audience tape as the audio source. The band interview that starts around 27 min. is from Houston (according to Gary Taylor's latest book) so I'd place it later in the video to keep the chronology. And the footage starting at 1:23:41, isn't it from the departure from London airport just before leaving to US? I use Gary Taylor's book for the evidence.

Look here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4G73BNlHWLE&t=474s

7:55 at this video, top of the page 102. Gary mentions Freddie and his whip and Brian invesetigating a gift shop. So that would be Heathrow?

Also I have this bit without subtitles put on the video, but with Polish voiceover, so it'd require putting the audio from the source you used.

Ooh thanks, I'll definitely do some investigation. I have Gary's book, so I'll have a look there!

And the first second of this video. I can't seem to find it on V2.
