The coronavirus is ten times more deadly than the seasonal flu. (1 in a 1000 people affected with the seasonal flu will die while 1 in a 100 will die from the Coronavirus.) If they weren't taking all of these precautions e.g. quarantine, Covid-19 could spread significantly and reach millions and millions of people. It's very contagious. Every person who catches it without knowing can pass it onto 2-3 people, so that's why in Italy you can't take any risks.

The problem with the corona virus is that it can be completely asymptomatic. The actual number of people currently infected with it could be 10 or even 20 times greater than the official figures, which would make it no deadlier than the seasonal flu.
