I hate to be a killjoy, but am I the only person who thinks they'll have problems getting the rights cleared?

Apparently so.

I'll just nick mine..yoink! AND I'll become Sir Bob Gandolf...one ring to rule them all! One DVD to destroy them all!

Yes you are.

Somehow I can't see anyone refusing unless they want to be named and shamed and suffer The Wrath of Bob!

I don't give a shit about getting all the rights - I just want to see the Queen stuff!

The Queen stuff should be released as a single too...

I think the reason it wasn't released before was because of the problems with rights etc.

I suspect Mr Geldof is banking on everyone's good nature and the thought that it's better that the rights are granted and money goes to charity rather than a bootlegger.

Of course, it may mean an edited version due to rights being refused by some artists...

The FM tribute was for charity ... and much remains unreleased on any format. Half of it never made it to DVD.

... So I agree with Zeni.

Furthermore, whoever buys it could keep it for themselves as an ultimate collectors item ...

I'm very delighted by this story.

Sure took Bob a while to figure this out.

However, I'd be happy with the UK Live Aid rather than the US Live Aid portion. The US portion was awful. It was boring and there wasn't much excitement than in Wembley.

About the clearances I'd bet that Led Zep and The Who are not going to give the OK in releasing their appearances of the concert. They've always said that they weren't that pleased with their performances.

About the Freddie Tribute, the video had the almost full concert (except for Spinal Tap, Plant's Innuendo, Zucchero, Extreme doing 'More than Words', and others). I wonder why the DVD release ONLY included the second half.

"I wonder why the DVD release ONLY included the second half."

Brian said it was due to getting the clearances for all the non-Queen stuff. Rather than have Jim Beach do it, they just cut it out.

I still think that if we get Live Aid on DVD, someone will hold out because they didn't like their performance that day.

Well that was pretty lazy of QP for not including the first part on the DVD.

Still, I wonder how come QP produced the almost whole concert for video back in '93, and couldn't for the DVD.

Were there problems back in '93 when the video of the tribute was released?

Well we can play the game of who isn't going to give the OK for the release.

Again, I still bet that these two groups will refuse the rights of their performance to be shown for the DVD release:

The Who
Led Zepellin

For the one that asked about the set list of the concert here it is:

The video was in the pipeline from the beginning, so getting clearance was already considered and dealt with. The impression I got was that the DVD would require new clearances, which could be tricky. Acts like Guns and Roses and Extreme have since broken up, so who knows if they would ever agree.

I dont think this DVD will be out by Christmas, all the arists have to be cleared by whichever record company is releasing it, and the whole thing has to be mastered onto DVD. Not to mention any additional features like backstage video, interviews and documentaries all have to be recorded / collected.
I think it will be out in July 2005 to capitalise on the 20 year anniversary of Live Aid.

You could be right All Star. And I would almost rather see just the Queen segments as an extra somewhere. This could backfire if some artists don't agree to it.. but maybe the idea of proceeds going to charity will help them change their minds.

As to the Freddie tribute, I'm afraid that lots of things have changed with the arrival of DVDs. Perhaps because of the higher quality or the basic fact that they didn't exist at the time, it seems nobody just automatically has the same rights as they might have with VHS/laserdisc. I miss that 3 hour edit too. I keep being tempted to get into laserdiscs again but I refuse to go back to tapes.. I'm trying my best to get away from them :)
