talking about baptists...you should check out

real nice church folk! As a gay guy it makes me sick that people still hate people just because they're gay.

There are probably more fundamentalist religious wackos in this country than in the entire middle east.

As sick as this comment might seem, the truth is that the world would be MUCH a better place if all of them were dead. It doesn't matter if they're christian or muslim, they're really fucked up in the head and they are the biggest threat to humanity.

Ugh, what an overstatement. Fundamentalists are not the biggest threat to humanity, nor are all fundamentalists like Fred Phelps.

I always struggle with people who go on about how being gay is unnatural and God hates it etc. Surely if God made and loves us all then if he/she found homosexuality that abhorrent in his/her being, wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness and truth he/she could make it so that nobody was gay?

No, but we made fun of him anyway.

And actually, fundamentalists ARE, as I see it, one of the biggest threats to humanity. All of the world's problems stem down at the roots to either money or religion. Both the 9/11 hijackers and Exodus International are fundie groups.

I'm not arguing. Just pointing out that God has a tendency to smite his enemies, as the OT shows. Personally, I agree with most of what you said; I just enjoy being cheeky when I can.

"All of the world's problems stem down at the roots to either money or religion."

Of course, Fundamentalists represent only a small part of the world's religions, and certainly do not have a monopoly over the world's financial markets. They just become an easy target for those who think religion is bad.

"Both the 9/11 hijackers and Exodus International are fundie groups."

As is the American Baptist Churches USA. I somehow think the majority of them will be voting Kerry in the upcoming election, and I doubt they are a big threat to humanity.

I think the "story" teeters on the verge of hate speech but clearly crosses the line of intolerance. Also, I'm not quite certain "effervescing" is a word.
Religious fundamentalism is a problem but saying the world would be a better place if they were all dead is a bit harsh, IMO. And if you really think there are more religious fanatics in the US than the entire middle east, you have a serious problem with understanding of numbers... Yes, there are fanatics everywhere however, fanatics are, of course, going to be more numerous in impoverished areas of the world.

Of course effervescing is a word. It was a reference to a Syd Barrett solo song.

effervescing

Effervesce \Ef`fer*vesce"\, v. i. [imp. & p. p. Effervesced; p. pr. & vb. n. Effervescing.] [L. effervescere; ex + fervescere to begin boiling, incho., fr. fervere to boil. See Fervent.] 1. To be in a state of natural ebullition; to bubble and hiss, as fermenting liquors, or any fluid, when some part escapes in a gaseous form.

2. To exhibit, in lively natural expression, feelings that can not be repressed or concealed; as, to effervesce with joy or merriment.

Well, I said I wasn't certain. I still think the word is cumbersome.

I love this:

"Laura Schlesinger is a US radio personality who dispenses advice to people who call in to her radio show. Recently, she said that homosexuality is an abomination according to Leviticus 18:22 and cannot be condoned in any circumstance. The following is an open letter to Dr.Laura penned by a US resident and also posted on the Internet-

Dear Dr. Laura:

Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and I try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate.

I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the specific laws and how to follow them.

a) When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odour for the Lord (Lev. 1:9). The problem is my neighbours. They claim the odour is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

b) I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

c) Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighbouring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?

d) I have a neighbour who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?

e) A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination (Lev. 11:10), it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this?

f) Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?

g) Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev.19:27. How should they die?

h) I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

i) My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? (Lev.24:10-16). Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)

I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging.

Your devoted disciple and adoring fan."

Oh, lighten up. Hate speech? Spare me. It's called satire, and anyone who knows what the annual Southern Baptist Convention does in their spare time knows that this satire is fair.

And when did we ever say that the world would be better if they were all dead? The sickest implication we made was that their leaders look at gay porn, which would be very funny if it turned out to be true. I also know that I'm not inclined to be "tolerant" towards people who call me and everyone who thinks like me a "half-breed", a "part-human", and a "scumbag."*

Satire and hate speech aren't mutually exclusive.
Ah yes, I'm quite sure all SB have called you names. By that token, I suppose I should not tolerate you because in one of your other posts you stated that I am a right-wing extremist and homophobic.*
*Check the "Which country has the most Queen fans?" thread.

I believe my reaction would be different had you not made other stereotypical remarks about the southern US prior to this story.
While I am not a SB, I do realize that, just as any other convention (Yes, even Breakthrus!) tend to bring out a certain "fringe group" of fanatics. So of course, using these guys (and gals) as your example is fallacious.

And Jingles said the dead bit, not you.
