Seems counter-productive to fight intolerance with intolerance.

In all fairness, Pope John Paul Eagle, I was lumped in with the rest of the south.

I'm not saying we should kill them, I'm just saying that if they were dead or they just dissapeared the world would indeed be a better place. Can you deny that? And you know that most of them are already way too screwed up in the head to change their mind.
Also aside from fundamentalist, we can't leave behind extreme right wing, and extreme left wing nuts. Whether your political ideas are more towards one side to the other you can't deny that those who take things to the extreme are indeed a threat. But that's another story.

Now back to the topic of religious fundamentalists, Mandy and Sara were just making fun of fundamentalists. I don't think they would take any religious person as a fundamentalist. I'm sure that Mandy has friends (at least me) who have some kind of religious faith or religion and she still respects their beliefs. What I can see that pisses her off is to see all these fundamentalists taking things to the extreme and putting Jesus or God as an excuse to hate gays, blacks, jews, or any kind of group based on race, social status, political beliefs, nationality, ethnicity, or sexual preference.

Thank you Mr. Jingles.

And FYI Brandon, I don't get what you're on about. You're making far too big a deal about something that was SATIRE.

The problem is that there is this assumption that all fundamentalists are nuts, which is far from the case. How can a Black Fundamentalist, for example, be against blacks? But by lumping all fundamentalists into one catagory, that's essentially what you've just said.

Besides, who gets to determine who poses a threat? The intelligent people? The one's in charge of the government? The one's that vote?

Once again, fighting intolerance with intolerance seems counter-productive.

Maybe we should be tolerant of fundmentalists and allow them to abuse, injure, and kill people who are against their beliefs without having them fear persecution.

Besides, we all know that fundamentalists are not exactly basing their beliefs on whatever faith or religion they follow. They distort the truth of those beliefs, so they can have an excuse to spread hatred and violence. Ej: The "fact" that God hates homosexuals.

"Maybe we should be tolerant of fundmentalists and allow them to abuse, injure, and kill people who are against their beliefs without having them fear persecution."

I happen to know a few fundamentalists and they've never abused, injured, or killed people who are against their beliefs. Should they, too, be vanquished from the land because you think they are extremist?

So, to sum up, some fundamentalists are wacky and possibly evil, and the world would be better if they were dead or happen to disappear. Don't some people say the same things about immigrants? Homosexuals? Women? Liberals?

Religious fundamentalism is a problem but saying the world would be a better place if they were all dead is a bit harsh, IMO. And if you really think there are more religious fanatics in the US than the entire middle east, you have a serious problem with understanding of numbers... Yes, there are fanatics everywhere however, fanatics are, of course, going to be more numerous in impoverished areas of the world.
Oh, lighten up. Hate speech? Spare me. It's called satire, and anyone who knows what the annual Southern Baptist Convention does in their spare time knows that this satire is fair.

And when did we ever say that the world would be better if they were all dead? The sickest implication we made was that their leaders look at gay porn, which would be very funny if it turned out to be true. I also know that I'm not inclined to be "tolerant" towards people who call me and everyone who thinks like me a "half-breed", a "part-human", and a "scumbag."*

*Direct quotes from SBC leaders/members.
Satire and hate speech aren't mutually exclusive.
Ah yes, I'm quite sure all SB have called you names. By that token, I suppose I should not tolerate you because in one of your other posts you stated that I am a right-wing extremist and homophobic.*
*Check the "Which country has the most Queen fans?" thread.

I believe my reaction would be different had you not made other stereotypical remarks about the southern US prior to this story.
While I am not a SB, I do realize that, just as any other convention (Yes, even Breakthrus!) tend to bring out a certain "fringe group" of fanatics. So of course, using these guys (and gals) as your example is fallacious.

And Jingles said the dead bit, not you.
Yo, man. You missed the point in that last thread. I AM ALSO FROM THE SOUTH. Georgia, to be specific, which is still one hell of a backwards state. You, being from Alabama, have surely noticed that half our region is still stuck in Reconstruction. I do not take pride in this fact, and greatly admire the people such as yourself who have chosen to commit "moral suicide" in wanting to move forward.

The SBC was, at one point, ten blocks from my house. Their leaders speak for the group, and when their leaders call me a half-breed, I tend to associate it with the group. Satire pokes at the extremes. If you don't like it, don't read us. Or Dave Barry.
God wants you to send me some money. "Seven spades doubled, vulnerable, making seven? You BITCH."

You are no Dave Berry ... you are teenage angst at its worst. I tried reading your entire sophomoric story, but it was too long, boring, incoherent, and effervescing.

That's my point. You are from the south, I am from the south and about one hundred million other people are also from the south. Making any blanket statements regarding us all is pointless as it destined to be wrong. The same can be said about SB. Yes there are crazy people in the sect. But there are wackos, religious or other, everywhere and in every group. Focusing solely on the south is a disservice to all of us who live here.
If you truly believe that by leaving the south you leave all the backwards attitudes, check this link

And as Zeni said, fighting intolerance with intolerance is counterproductive.

I don't see anywhere in which Mandy or I said "all people from the South are _____" (anything)

We never said it, we never implied it, and we don't believe in generalization. So why don't YOU, Brandon, take a chill pill before YOU make generalizations about US. We were making fun of ONE SPECIFIC SECT of loonies. And if you had actually PAID ATTENTION to the story, you'd see that we also made fun of:

Syd Barrett
Rooster
The Passion
Roger Waters
Roger Taylor
Phil Collins
Kansas (the band, not the state)
Bill O'Reilly
George W. Bush (and I'm a member of his campaign)
Karl Rove
and of course, ourselves.

So what are you complaining about?

Look again. I stated that, in another post, Geeks(Mandy?) made a generalisation about the south. Not you.
Yes, you are making fun of a religion. An entire religion. (Or, at the very least, an entire sect of a religion.) You asked what we thought and I gave my opinion. You obviously didn't really want any opinions contrary to your own.
And, for the record, I made absolutely no generalisation regarding either you or Mandy. I kept my statements accurate and pertinent to either this or other threads.
