EU total: 118 medals United States: 72

There is no real stereotype, Americans just have more things to be proud of and less worries. We're all the same person, though. Plus, I wouldn't call pride 'ugly'.

Many countries in the world have great political freedoms. Sweden hasn't been in a war for upwards a century. Japan has a much longer life expectancy. Denmark has a much lower human suffering index. Italy created pizza. Most of the world does not have the death penalty. Most industrialized nations have universal health care.
I'm not saying this isn't a great country - it is, and we should be proud of it. But there's no reason to walk around with our noses up in the air, snubbing the rest of the world, simply because we DO have something good. And that goes for everyone else, too - they're just as bad as we are.
