FM wrote songs very fast at times, sometimes literally off the top of his head and sometimes it took him a while, especially lyrics, (drugs played a part in it Im afraid to say). Rarely and I was told very rarely he wrote songs with a specific person in mind.
BTW I have to agree that Champions is to some extent a "gay" anthem, FM liked to "speak his mind" he didnt give a "toss" about what others thought, Champions (as I was told and lead to believe by a few FMs close friends) was written as a smack in the face at those that "made fun of" FM in his early years, those that thought he was too effeminate or a real "prat" as one aricle written at the time stated.
It was also written with the NME in mind, one person told me as a way at "getting back at those who thought Queen were a "joke", (much like what is happening nowadays to a band called The Darkness BTW)!
So FM wrote that song to show his "enemies" that he will not be put down, he wasn't going to let anyone or thing stop him. During this period and in the video of the song FM began wearing the unitards or (ballet dancer otufits), now if that dont tell you something! LOL!
Also he began to wear ballet slippers on stage as well even into 1978, with the leather gear. He also during the show would jump on a bodyguards shoulders (the man usually wore a superman outfit) FM liked to shock he got off on it personally and professionally.
In gay clubs he would often dance shirtless and sometimes strip completely (onetime witnessed I was told by someone), so he was out there! And proud even though it (at the time) was annoying to his "straight" bandmates and his management.

This story about We Are The Champions really gets on my nerves. Please anyone tell me why every Queen song written by Freddie has to be about AIDS or about homosexuality?! You Take My Breath Away might be written for a guy he loved, the song it's about love and who cares who is the lover? In what concerns WATC, please take a moment to look at the lyrics and try to see if they aren't fit for a sports team. And then try to see if the lyrics couldn't be regarded as a band's "manifesto". Can't it be about a band so often "kicked in the face" by the musical press, but finally getting succesful, despite the difficulties encountered on their way? Can't it be also about anyone of us, eh? Oh and yes it can be also about gay pride, no one can deny it... What makes the lyrics so great is that they apply to so many situations in life, it's a song for the gays and also a song for the straight ones.
P.S. I'm no homophobic at all. I'm sorry for one thing though: there are some people in here who tend to accuse anybody of homophobia whenever they express something not so very nice about the gays. I can see that everybody has to apologise before saying anything that might be interpreted that way. I always thought WATC is about the band's rise to superstardom, and taking on the world. I always thought the "WE" in the song is Freddie telling his bandmates that Queen is #1. I never thought once that it was a gay song.

Could make sense, but the lyrics aren't restrictive at all, they make you think about a lot of things, I stick to my opinion that anyone can interprete them the way he likes and that's exactly what's great about Freddie's songs (most of his love songs, for example, could be sung both to a man and to a woman, they just fit to evryone...).
