It might be just my imagination but I think that the pure DVD-As are in much better quality. Thus, they would have to work on all tracks again. And work they should do since we are paying about 20 bucks to listen to it.

Were they only 4.1? I'm happy to be corrected, but my GVHI&II DVDs both say DTS 5.1, and they certainly sound like 5.1 on GVHII, although I have my doubts about the sound on GVHI, apart from the tracks which also appear on the NATO DVD-A.

A DVD-A is a DVD Audio. This means that the albums are remixed in DTS-Surround sound. As long as you have a DVD-Player, a decent receiver (DTS-comatible!)
A dvd-audio is defined by MLP encoded audio material (stereo or surround), not DTS or DD which are merely secondary lossy compression formats (yes dts is lossy) included to provide dvd-video player compatibility.
Just to add a bit to PMA's post, DVD-A and DTS are two completely different formats. It has helped, however, that Queen's DVD-As include a DTS track on them to make them more compatible with various DVD players, particularly since DVD-Audio is not as widespread as other formats. Both formats will play 5.1, though.
And a slightly unrelated question for PMA (or anyone else that would know) -
I saw where several Elton albums were being released in SACD in the next couple months. Are they strictly in SACD format, or will they be released as DVD-As as well, a la Goodbye Yellow Brick Road?

I wish I knew the answer, not that it matters, because I can play SACD now :-P. Universal ignores my inquiries on the topic and I've sent their customer service/feedback whatever several polite questions asking 'Where be da dvd-audio biatch?'

When the GYBR SACD was coming, it was announced on DVD-A at the same time on their website, whereas the current batch of Classic Albums + Peachtree Road SACD, there is zero mention of a following DVD-A.
Most artists make a choice and release either on SACD or DVD-A because the market is still small and two formats would not sell enough copies.
However, it would be nice if *any* other Queen album would be released on DVD-A. It's been a year since The Game came out and I am beginning to believe that this is just another forgotten toy and we will never get all albums on DVD-A.
Edit: according to a recent German interview with Brian and Roger there will be a re-release of the Platinum collection partly in surround sound (please don't ask me what "partly" means) Maybe this is the next DVD-A? To make the few people who have not yet bought the Platinum collection finally buy it?

I think it's because Brian is spending so much time on the musical, other things may be taking a back seat. We do, however, have the Milton Keynes DVD to look forward to. I hope they don't abandon the DVD-A releases, because the two so far have been awesome, but I think it might be a while before the whole catalogue is released, if ever. If they can't find the missing master tapes, Brian might not want to release something he considered to be a compromise.
@pma: Of course you are right. However, I am limited to a standard DVD-player, so I can only access the DTS sound. Can anybody tell me whether it would be worth buying a 'real' DVD-Audio player to listen to the MLP-sound?
I ask because I think the DTS sound is BIG, and I cannot believe there can be much difference. Also, I have not the best surround speakers.
I agree that Brian and Rog are very busy with the musicals and therefore have hardly any time for other things. But I am certain there will be more DVD-As.
On the whole I think we cannot complain. Just think back a couple of years after the Made in Heaven Release... There, we were waiting for something new about Queen and got nothing. Now, there is the whole Queen machine slowly coming to life again: Concerts, DVD's, new songs (from the 46664 concert), DVD-As etc.

I have a DVD Player which can also play the 'real' DVD-A format, and I have to say, I find the DTS sound actually better, but it's a question of taste. The DTS sound is definitely bigger, and more bassy, but the 'real' DVD-A sound is probably what purists would say is how it's meant to be heard.
as far as Elton John releases in DVD-A vs SACD, i wouldn't imagine Sony would release their surround mixes on a competing format (they own SACD, after all). i could be wrong on this...i've been proven to be wrong before, but, that's just my thoughts.
But Elton is on Universal, not Sony. As already mentioned, GBYR was released on DVD-A, so it's not an issue.
