Ok, this has been talked about before, about Freddie's change in his mannerism's and personality around the last couple years of his life, but does anyone know for sure when Freddie knew without a doubt that he was ill?

Do many of you think he knew something during Live Aid in 85', Wembley '86? During "Great Pretender" in 87'?

He was so private.

Now, from what I gather with interviews with Brian..the band knew something was up when Freddie didn't want to tour, but when did he tell the band....Brian's most recent interviews sound as though he didn't confirm what it was with the band until months before his death.

Does anyone know the timeline on this for sure?

My mother told me it was around the time he was working with Monserrat Caballe.

Then you can challenge me.
Its human nature to care about this.

I live in the USA, but of course the world knows what happened here on Sept 11th 2001.....our tv stations probably showed those 2 jets crash into New York City's two World Trade center towers between 500-1000 times in the weeks thereafter.

Every American I have ever seen will stop and watch everytime.

Of course we know the outcome, and its not good... but it just sparks the interest so much, you can't help it.

I would say Queen is 99% of this board's members favorite band.

Queen's most popular, most famous, and most beloved member having AIDS is VERY MUCH part of the history of Queen.

You cannot deny this.

If a person wants to listen to just the music, thats fine.... but if some of us want to go beyond the music, then we naturally, at some point will have to come face to face with Freddie's illness.

Trust me, I'd would MUCH RATHER have Freddie here making music, and celebrating his 59th birthday this Septemeber with all of us.

If Freddie were here, I myself would still go beyond the music, and look for lost interviews, and study articles of what Queen's members do in their spare time, what hobbies they pursue outside of music..etc..etc..

But that's not what happened.
Freddie died of one of the world's most feared diseases 2 months after is 45th birthday.

This is Queen history, and a very important part of the Queen history.

I label myself as a Queen purist. Meaning, I pretty much agree with everything John Deacon has said about the group, which Deaky has pretty much said: "Freddie cannot be replaced, without Freddie there is no Queen, and I have retired from the music business".

Freddie's illness and final days intrigues more people than just myself, or Peter Freestone and Jim Hutton wouldn't have included chapters on the subject.

For me, Queen was Brian, Rog, John + Freddie from the early 1970's to Nov. 1991. Thats how long Queen lasted. Queen died in Nov. 1991, (John Deacon will agree).

I just try to learn everything I can about the group in that span of time. Freddie's illness is a major topic of discussion as that is what ended the band.

John Deacon would have went on as long as Freddie was there, I have NO DOUBT in the world about this.

Everyone in the music industry as always said how smart John Deacon (the quiet Queen is), to me this was proven by him knowing when Queen was over.

you havent said anything i dont know, & if hyperthetically it came to light Freddie became HIV positive in april the 23rd 1985 & developed full blown AIDS in june the 6th 1987, people would start asking how exactly did he contract it (yes via sex but people would want to know the exact method) thats my point somethings should remain private

If people want to know about Freddie's final days listen to Mother Love & it answers everything

If people are geniunely concerned about HIV/AIDS fantastic (i've had friends/distant family) succumbe to this disease & people want to get educated i have no problem.

Max,

Of course I wasn't asking anyone for specific dates...as even Freddie didn't know the who, when or how's.

My question was more broad, and it was just based on opinion...

I thought I would get answers like:
"I feel near the time of Live Aid" or "I feel as early as during The Works tour".

If you read the topic's question, you will see it was a "opinion only" topic, as no one knows the real answers.

I, however refused to let anyone make me feel like some weirdo because I am interested in Freddie's life. I am just as interested in his pre-Queen days as I am his final days....just as I am in the other surviving members....its part of my favorite band's history, and I am going to pursue it..enough said?

Sorry to hear that you have had close ones pass away from the horrible diesease.

i think we are all sorry about all the things that has happened becos of this awful disease, and after listening to what some people have sed all i think any of us need is opinions, not exact dates or times (unless someone desperatly wants em) and i dont think anyone should ever go in to the personal life of how exactly Freddie recieved aids, that should aonly b kept with those VERY VERY close to Freddie, no one else. I to be honest have sed what i need to on this topic and will say no more unless someone is bitchin on at someones opions cos i F***ing hate it when someone has a go at somone else, enough sed!

I think Freddie knew in 1984! Everyone is forgetting about Mary Austin and what she has said.

Clearly by the Kind of Magic Interviews you can tell something is wrong while Freddie was interviewed you can notice his face is swollen and broken out. Anyone with DVD 2 can see for themselves.

Personally I think and yes (I could be wrong) Freddie found out in 1984 that he was HIV + with medications, diet and moderation of lifestyle activites lived quite healthy till 1987 and then slowly his health declined.

Also remember toward the end Freddie was sick and tired of taking his meds and dealing with being ill. It would be interesting to discuss if he decided to continue his meds if he would still be with us today. I have no opinion either way on this but thought food for thought!
U
Well i know i sed i will not discuss about this anymore but screw that, u have made a valid point about his med, i think he continued his med aslong as he cud until he probably realised if he did continue he wud not be the same and probably cud not continue his music career the way he had done or not at all so probably thought he shud just end it( as sick as this sounds) instead of living on medication for the rest of his life and retiring from the world of music, becos if u think about it, if he did quit and remained on med, Brian and Roger wud proably not be as popular as they are, and Queen itself wud probably not be as famous as they are now, u have got to think he must of made a very tough decision. Life or Death, and he proabably made the right decision in the end (agen sounds sick) but its true, think of it from his point of view, wot wud u do?
S
That's a good point, but sadly, as good as AIDS medication has gotten, there is nothing that would have extended his life from 1991 to 2005.

That I am sure of.

I also do not think Freddie had a "life or death" choice to make.

Freddie was a fighter, and his spirits probably remained high after his diagnosis because he probably felt that he could beat it....or at least live a long normal life with it.

For the disease to take over Fred's body like it did those last few month, I do not feel was up to anyone..... lets keep in mind, Freddie very well could have been HIV positive since 1980, 1981...or earlier.

I am not 100% sure that say, during the filming for the Radio Ga Ga video that Freddie knew for a fact that he was HIV positive....I would say he didn't.

But in my mind, I feel he absolutely knew at Wembley in 1986...When he made the statement "So you can forget those rumours, we will stay together until we fucking will die, I'm sure of it".

He knew.

Just like i sed isnt it, i feel he knew from the Magic tour that he didnt have long and like Brian May sed on one of the programmes, The story of Queen on VH1 i think he sed "as soon as he walked through the door we knew he terminaly ill but he wanted to continue for aslong as possible so when he did get up and sing, he gave it his all, he sung better than we had ever heard him before, and then we knew he didnt have long" (or something along those lines, dont quote me on it even though i used quotation marks! but like u sed, he was a fighter, he fought until the end, asong as possible but i stil lthink he made a decision a few motnhs before he died, to go oon or to give up as it were. I dont think we will know the truth, only the band will know the truth i think, and Mary Ausin.

Why cant we just let this rest? Remember Freddie as one of the greatest artist of our time! Why must there always be this AIDS issue??

This is not morbid curiosity really, the state of Freddie's health simply adds dimension to the song, performance and allows the listener to interpret the song with perspective and insight.
It's really that simple.
Nobody wanted this to happen
A
The fact that he was so ill while making those songs makes them even greater.
That time will come, one day you'll see, when we can all be friends.
M
And I think the context in which music is made is terribly important. Witness the "what was Innuendo all about?" discussions we have from time to time.

So understanding that context is valid, despite being a little upsetting and substantially morbid.

Rite once agen if u look u all are startin to get into the big arguement, so lets calm down abit and keep to the subject of the question.
And their is one banned interview which i have sed but of course their will be no sources about this interview becos it was more or less moments before he shot one of his last videos and the band were asked by Freddie to deny anything which they still do, but im not goin to get into any of these arguements, like i sed if u want to argue take it elsewhere, not in someones forum.

Yeah and he gave this interview to you that's why you're the only one who watched it. And why it was banned then?

And if you don't want to argue - you don't have to join to forum, because it's a discussion forum, notice board, but not only huge FAQ!
