Ask those people to tell you what band they can think of that can be as versatile as:
* Crazy Little Thing Called Love
* Tie Your Mother Down
* Bohemian Rhapsody
* Another One Bites the Dust
* Radio Ga Ga
Just take these 5 songs for example.... all sound nothing like the other (agreed?) especially to the average listener.
If you played these 5 songs to the average person, and said which band is your favorite..... then which band....then which band...
They would essentially be listing which order they like these songs in...
BUT THEN YOU REVEAL:
This is all the same band!!
The Beatles are the only other band that are even in the same league as Queen when it comes to versatility.
Queen can write about anything.
And trust me, I am a musician with perfect pitch... I can transcribe music, I can hear a song once (sometimes twice) and play it on guitar, and passibly on piano...and let me explain:
Freddie's arrangements especially are very complex. Freddie uses weird keys, weird timings...etc..etc...
Freddie plays piano like a drummer....he almost uses the piano as a percussion instrument... and songs like BoRhap and March of the Black Queen are so complaex, they are out of the realm of talent that a Mick Jagger, Roger Daltry...or Paul Rodgers could even fathom.
You can explain to anyone who is pulling your chain about liking Queen that you understand why they don't care for Queen...as Queen fans are proven to be more sophisticated, with higher IQ's then listeners of "common music"..... and you can state people like Arlene and I (who are brillant for examples).
More importantly, keep in mind.
Queen didn't invent music....they just perfected it.
Cheers!

Another note about Freddie, gay, bi, whatever, well who did Freddie openly state was the love of his life, who did he leave his mansion to when he died, who was his most trusted, lifelong best friend, even if he dated men?....
a woman, Mary Austin, who he always spoke of with endearment and trust, as she still does of him..and she knew he was gay...
And though Mary dated and married, she has always stated that Freddie was the love of her life as well and her lifelong very best trusted best friend.
There you go. Love, friendship, respect, regard, knows no boundaries, race, creed, sexual orientation, religion.
I adore Freddie and wish I had been years older and a journalist and working in the music industry and maybe had the opportunity to have met and interviewed and worked with my hero, in music.

I agree with you Scott 100% on every musical and artistic level. Freddie was a genius. His unfathomable vocal range and vocal octave levels, his way of arranging/orchestrating complex music structure, writing, playing on piano, guitar, and again arranging even Roger's, Brian's, John's music...his mind was an endless river of extaordinary musical variation and ideas...and so are Brian, Roger, & John as well.
There is only one Queen...from dance hall. opera, rock, metal, disco, rockabilly, pop, classical, glam....they did it all and with brilliance and finesse.
I agree Arlene, Mary was so lucky to have been Freddie best friend I wish I was at least alive when my hero was alive !!
