Meanwhile, Cherone has "Hole Hearted", "More than words"....and the VERY mild hit with Van Halen "Without You", which peaked at #43 on the US charts.
Don't rate talent based on commercial success. If that's how we're going to do things, then Britney Spears is one of the world's great singers.
In the entire 48 year history of rock n roll, Paul Rodgers has the distinction of being the ONLY lead singer to lead three bands to international multi-platinum success. Out of all the great singers, Paul is the only guy to have acheived this.

just a few random thoughts on this topic....
I was actually a fan on Extreme and liked Gary in them....Extreme III Sides To Every Story was a great album.....and I did buy Van Halen III.....but I thought he kinda sucked there when compared to hwen he was in Extreme.....(anyone remember that song on VH III that sounded like they ripped off Sweet Lady, btw?)
I would have to say though.....Paul is in a different league than Gary ever will be....I always considered Paul one of my favorite rock singers of all time (apart from Freddie of course :)).....
I listened to that 05 Cardiff bootleg recently, and WOW....Paul was ON there.....just thought he was AWESOME on TSMGO, especially....and even liked how he did the Freddie-style thing on AOBTD, where he sings a line and the crowd sings it back....

Gary would have been a much better fit than Paul Rodgers...no one under 40 knows who PR is (at least in the US). The only reason Gary did not get the gig was b/c of the Van Halen situation...(and the comment about Eddie and the booze is spot on. The sad truth is that Eddie is currently in the process of drinking himself to death).

Paul may be one of the world's best blues singers, But what does that matter? Queen isn't a blues band. I (as in Me, myself and...) think that George's voice is MUCH better suited to Queen's songs. Not to mention the range and power! A lot of people seem to think that George is some thin voiced, run of the mill pop singer, And that is just NOT true. His music may be poppy for the most part but that's because that's the kind of music he wants to make. Now, Before anyone goes and gets upset, I am NOT saying that Paul is a bad singer! I'm just saying that, In my opinion, His voice and style of singing do not fit with Queen's music very well. CERTAINLY not as well as George's. And that's the last thing I'll say on this subject.
George Michael however is HATED now in America. His credibilty went straight to Hell after grunge came! Then his infamous "bathroom" episode killed his credibilty ONCE AND FOR ALL here in the States!

GM isn't *hated* in america...his audience is just different here. He has zero cred/respect in the rock community, which in the US would be a large part of the crowd seeing Queen live. He is considered to be more of an easy-listening artist, with maybe some recent popularity in gay dance halls.
No doubt he can handle the slower queen material, but I cringe at the thought of him fronting keep your self alive or stone cold crazy

I honestly don't get why people seem to think George Michael can't handle singing a 'rock' song. How daft can you be? Him NOT singing 'rock' songs has nothing to do with if he CAN or not. I'm so tired of making this argument...
maybe GM can secrectly sing hard edged rock songs very well, but he certainly hasn't exhibited that skill thus far.........in america at least, the thought of it would make most people laugh
