What can I say? The United States is rarely a place suitable for individual opinion...

Whoa, don't confuse the actions of a school teacher with the general populace. Students always think they deserve more rights than teachers are willing to give.
Yeah Right - My 9 year old son got a "yikes-o-gram" this past Friday, and lost recess privledges when he accidentally blurted out "Oh No" when he accidentally wrote in the wrong journal.
Not all teachers mis-use or abuse their position of authority, but I believe 5 to 10 % do.
Did your son tell you this is why he lost his recess or did the teacher tell you this is why she took away his recess? Did the "Yikes-O-Gram" state that little Rip lost his recess bc he said "oh no?" If so, I believe I'd have to speak with little Rip's teacher. I'm not sure what type of children this teacher is used to teaching but in my school, our teachers would be over the moon to have to take a child's recess away for accidentally saying "Oh no." Usually they get their recess taken away for saying something like, "You're not my boss and I don't have to do what you tell me to do bitch." Something along those lines.

My wife read to me the note he got from school while I was at work. Basicly, all it stated was that he blurted "oh no" during class. My wife sending a note back stating she thinks the teacher over-reacted, but it is her class.
In the teacher's defense, she is a young, new teacher that is recently married and does not have children. Also, my son has ADHT and has trouble sitting still or paying attnetion. However, he is a good student, and previous teachers have done well with him. I think she is frustrated with his ADHT.
However, she has a personality of a toad, and appears to be better suited to a military academy. Her grading of papers is ridiculous, as she is less concerned with whether a math problem is correct, than if whether t's are crossed or i's are dotted. For example, in simplistic terms here is a math problem ...
Two doggies went to the park. Then two more doggies arrived. How many doggies are there?
If you answered "4", you would be completely wrong.
What is the real answer?
"4 doggies"

Er...have you spoken to the principal? She sounds like she needs a talking to from him/her because being that pedantic will cause the kids to lose confidence in themselves.
Would they let your son change classes? My mum had me taken out of a class when I was in the equivalent of 5th grade because the teacher made me sit on the floor by myself all day for allegedly swinging on my chair. He'd hated me ever since the first parent interviews because my mum tried to offer suggestions on how I could be better extended.

I'm not familiar with ADHT. What is that? ADD is Attention Deficit Disorder and ADHD is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder but I haven't heard of ADHT yet.
Dragonzflame is correct about the teacher wearing down your son's confidence. Half the battle of young students is getting the confidence up to be able to answer the questions. If they feel that no one thinks they can do it, then they will believe it as well.

Heh, my kindergarten teacher thought I was retarded.
It turns out she was right.
It turns out she was right.
Ooops, I meant ADHT ...
We've thought about asking to switch teachers, but not seriously yet.
My son is certainly not lacking confidence academicly, but might be too much of an introvert.

I think Rip meant ADHD. I'm not too sure.
Same deal here, dragonzflame. I got withdrawn by my mum half way through the year because she was pissed that, at the start of the year my teachers were 'Yes, yes, Cameron is a great student! Here! Have a lolly pop!'..then when it came towards the end of the year 'CAMERON IS A SHIT FOR BRAINS AND I WOULD RATHER EAT TIGHTLY WOUND DOG TURDS THAN BE HIS TEACHER'. Heh, she was so angry that day. It was lovely.

It might be a school directive to be tough on 4th graders. I just found out tonight at Cub Scouts that in another 4th Grade class, my son's fiend lost recess privledges for a sneeze.

And I said "no one WANTS to be all up on YOU".
Then she goes "TAKE A SHOWER!" and my friend Connie said to me "you should tell her to get a life".
I replied "nah, i'm not gonna be bothered. at least i'm not a preppy slut." and the girl overheard and complained to the teacher.
So today, the teacher takes me out and gives me a lecture about keeping my opinions to myself.
And then the girl's thug boyfriend comes up to me and goes "you nearly lost your life yesterday! don't EVER say anything like that EVER AGAIN!"
WTF? What do I do?
