I wasn't keen on the 5ive collaboration either... but I'm siding with Brian on this one. I could bang on about how the Queen legacy is not being ruined, but I choose not to. I'm going to comment on the man at the centre of all this.
Mr Hawkins has nothing to do with all this, and yet he goes shooting his mouth off about Brian. Good rock stars will keep their mouths shut and get on with the job in hand: entertaining people. I trust Brian will do the decent thing and ignore Hawkins' comments.

This article is about a year and a half old from memory, but more importantly, its pretty certainly a misquote or complete tabloid untruth.
Justin Hawkins, and his brother Dan have never hidden from their Queen influences, but more importantly, they were then, and are now on very good terms with Brian May - they were due to appear with QPR at Hyde Park in fact. Justin would not, and did not say this about Brian, although if he disagrees with the collaboration with Five - fair enough - I cant say I was particularly fond of it.
RE The Darkness in general- Anyone who says the Darkness sounds like Queen needs to bugger off and listen to Permission to Land again. Aside from a couple of guitar harmonies here and there, and the odd Mayesque riff I would strongly argue that album is far more derivative of Thin Lizzy and AC/DC but with their own style and twist on it. There are Queen like elements, but they arent that obvious.
The new album, despite some scandalous untruth by someone earlier has been getting excellent reviews from the likes of Q and Classic Rock, and I have yet to read anything worse than an
"average" review, but that was from the musical force that is Front Magazine if memory serves, and the vast majority have been excellent!
Finally - the new album will without doubt have some more Queen influences - especially with the introduction of piano etc, but that can only serve to champion a great style of music that has been practically killed off by the boredom and depression of so many modern bands. If there are Queenesque moments on their records then they are very knowing tributes and homages, and should absolutely not be viewed as ripping off.
The Darkness are original in that they are creating new music, influenced by classic music, but with their own very distinctive style to it. The thing that is truly disapointing from Queen fans, is the inablilty to understand and appreciate that everything the Darkness do is laced with a squirt of humour, and with tongue somewhat in cheek - its a style of music that, while passionate and meaningful is ultimately designed for people to have fun with - something another band once did to great effect, although for now the name of that band escapes me - I believe it was King or something?

The 5ive collaboration did not hit the charts nor did Robbie Williams collaboration. The Beyonce/Britney/Pink collaboration was for a Pepsi commercial which aired I believe only in the UK. John Deacon did the right thing staying away from those fiascos. Paul Rodgers is well-respected in the rock community here in the United States for his work in Free but mainly Bad Company(whom were a staple of rock radio in the 1970s in the US and signed to Led Zeppelin's Swan Song label), The Firm(his mid-1980s collaboration with Led Zeppelin mastermind Jimmy Page) and his 1993 Muddy Waters Blues tribute album which featured Brian, David Gilmour, Jeff Beck and many others plus his 1991 collaboration with ex-Who drummer Kenney Jones called The Law whom had the US rock radio #1 smash Laying Down the Law. The US really doesnt follow up on current things going on with classic rock artists really. Which really upsets me because I love it sooo much.
