I think it's better than The Works !
Most of the songs are pretty good if not outstanding.
It could never be in the same league as say ANATO.

I think it all came down to timing, at least here in the States. Disco was over by '82-not only over but actually suffering a severe back-lash. Rod Stewart, Kiss, Stones-anybody who had done disco took a lot of sh*t for it. Bites the Dust had been a huge hit, but it had been so huge and was actually played so often that people may have been "Queened out" to the point that no matter what they did it would have been slammed. At the time it came out (I was 17), I didn't like it. Three or four years later I began to listen to it again and began to like it more. I think it has aged well. I wouldn't be surprised if someone sampled some of the sounds for a song today.

Most of the posts here are from much younger fans of the band but my personal experience was when it first came out in 82. I was and am still a fan and up to that point we were used to hearing great music from Queen. The Game was huge here in the States and everything up to then was AWESOME music from the band. But when Hot Space came out we weren't too sure what the hell just happened. It was like we (the fans) were cruising along and then all of a sudden we hit a brick wall. We were ued to rock and then this funky, R&B thing came out. Were certainly weren't ready for it. It was WAY ahead of it's time. I think it's interesting that younget fans like this album but when you're used to hearing great music year after year come out from Queen and then this album comes out... it really changes your view of the band for a while. Though there are some really good songs on it. In general, it was a big left turn for a band that up to that point did everything right. But that didn't stop me from admiring their music.

You have to understand. At the time it came out, Queen fans maybe you or I who love the album now would have been..."What the heck is this?". Within the scope of when it came out/between the albums it came out with. But with time, like a fine wine, it have matured. So at the time, I can see why it was lothed. But not anymore. Look at Zeppelin 3, when it came out everybody was looking for Whole Lotta Love part 2, but got Electric/Folk/Acoustic music and they lost a lot of fans with that one. But Zep 3 over time is one of their best. You can sit around all day and chose albums that at the time was universily panned but now 10, 15, 25yrs later are some of the best albums in each band catalogs...

Well said!!! I was 16 when it came out and a fan for several years prior to that. I didn't loathe it but was definitely a slap in the face when Body Language was released. Under Pressure was the first song we heard and the general feeling was that this was going to be a great follow up to the Game. But nobody was ready for what was to follow. The younger fans seem to embrace it these days. Back then I was the same age as some of the people that posted here and we spent four years listen to fucking disco. People are more forgiving these days. Good for you younger fans!!! Rock on!

i love the hot space album. it is very sexy i thought. i remember when metallica came out with load most fans hated cause they cut there hair and the music was not up to pair with there other ablums. for one i didnt like load. it was more alternative than heavy metal. and not very metallica like. i'm glade metallica is back to there roots. granted the hair is for some of them still short. back the queen album america hates change when they love a band or a singer and if they come out with something different they usually dont like it.

People were much to staunch back then...im open to a lot of genres, so if a band I like lapsed into a different genre, I dont think I would mind..to much..but I get the slap in the face/brick wall comments.

I think the rock fans in the US ditched it but a lot of the funk fans dug the music...

i am going to add my bit to this one....

i bloody-well hate it. imo - it's the biggest crock of shit they ever produced.

1. syndrums
2. synbass
3. too much funk
4. there's no natural flow to the album...the songs sound like a disjointed bunch of tracks, not a well-constructed-fit-together album
5. many of the lyrics are lazy - almost like the band felt a need to "get something out at all costs"
6. Roger and Brian didn't (and don't) like it
7. Freddie was even almost apologetic for it...at MK Bowl..."now most of you know that we got some new sounds out in the last week. for what it's worth, we're gonna do a few songs in the funk, black category...whatever you call it. that doesn't mean we've lost our rock n roll feel, i mean it's only a bloody record...people get so excited about these things"

btw - before you criticise me as dyed in the wool, boring traditionalist....i bought the album at the time...and genuinely hated it...i then gave it another chance on cd much later on...and i still hate it...it is (imo) souless (ironic huh) substance-free (even more ironic - considerign the drugs freddie was inhaling) pap...threw cd away

Hey! I coulda used that! :D !! I havnt been able to find hot space ANYWHERE on CD!! Except downtown T.O., and I had run out of cash... Anyhoo, I wont jump down your throat, Its your opinion, but I just like it.

i find it hard to understand that anyone could like HS above ANATO, II, NOTW, Queen, Jazz, ADATR....but then i also accept that it takes ALL SORTS...and the world would be a dull place if we all liked the same thing

but it's hard to conceive of queen fans who "like what the band is all about" having HS as their fave album when 50% of the band didn't/don't like it...and the singer apologised for it on stage...

I dont really think he apologized for it...just said something sorta random...not an apology IMO. I was listening to an interview yesterday, and this came up and Freddie said that he wasnt going to make any apologies for it.

read what i quoted above...it's a veiled apology...belive me "it doesn't mean we've lost our rock n roll feel" is definitely apologising for the new stuff...it's saying...we'll play what you want after we promote this new shite, and try to sell some records....
