Album Discussion : George Harrison - "All Things Must Pass"

Anyone else got this? I'm on my first listen, just a few tracks in but really liking it so far...

Oh, there's one I love. The song 'My Sweet Lord' is really good, IMHO; luckily, the rich mix of religions puts the title in perspective.

The Dylan-material actually works in Harrison's hands, which is more than Eric Clapton (whom I greatly admire, by the way. Just not his renditions of Dylan's stuff) can say.

In fact, I can't find anything wrong with the first triple-album in history.

I have this on LP and LOVEd it! I use past tense because I can't play it any longer. I must get the CD. It's been too long since I've listened to it. I'd swear I all but wore out the album years ago.

I was already aware of My Sweet Lord & Give Me Love (not on this album I know) but I'm almost at the end of the album, and there isn't a bad track so far.

Beware Of Darkness, I'd Have You Anytime, Wah-Wah, What Is Life, If Not For You, All Things Must Pass, Art Of Dying and Let It Down in particular are great.

Fantastic music from the Quiet Beatle, indeed.

Absolutely stunning album. Makes me wonder what could have been if All Things Must Pass was properly recorded by the Beatles.

Yes, I know there's a difference between George Harrison's solo career and The Beatles. I can just imagine how Wah-Wah would have gone down with Paul if recorded at a Beatles session. Much the same way as Not Guilty, I imagine.

I quite enjoy I Dig Love. Seems...groovy as the kids say these days.

Quite honestly, the way the Beatles were heading... I think a Beatles album would've basically been a compilation of all of their better solo songs :P

As for George Harrison... I love "Beware of Darkness". It's amazing what one can do with such simple chords.
My brother learned that song on uke and put it on Youtube! Haha.

George is my fave Beatle. At first, it was Ringo. Go figure, haha!

Anyway - I LOVE this album, even though it's SO overproduced.

My fave - It has to be a tie between "Isn't it a Pity" and "Run of the Mill." If I HAD to, I'd probably choose IIAP, except that it gets a bit redudant. ROTM has some interesting rhythmic changes, and I love the lyrics.

"If Not for You" is a great happy song.

Ummm... the first time my mother heard "Behind That Locked Door" she said it sounded like "On Top of Old Smokey," LOL.

Aren't there some lyrics in "Awaiting on You All" about the stock exchange and General Motors? But they're not in the lyrics booklet. At least not in the CD reissue box version.

Or maybe I'm imagining things...

Wow. I had forgotten just HOW redundant IIAP really is. It's kinda interesting how he varies the intrumentals and vocals. But still..sheesh. And that whole Hey Jude thing...

Too right. Another Day, Gimme Some Truth, Let It Down, Isn't It a Pity, The Back Seat of My Car etc, etc. Heck, I reckon even Child of Nature/Jealous Guy could have found a home on Everest.

What really shits me, is that there was never a Beatles reunion in the 70's, and for no good reason! They all played (but not at once) on a Ringo album. 3 of them jammed at some famous guys party (John wasn't there because he was lazy, or wasn't invited, or something).
Gun violence just sucks.

Listening to ATMP now...

One of the extra tracks on the 30th anniversary reissue box version is "I Live for You." George sounds good on this one. I wonder how much the vocal track might have been cleaned up from the original sessions.

On the other hand, most of this song uses his middle and lower range. And when he goes up high, it doesn't sound as...um...strained as it can usually in his upper voice. (Well, you know what I'm talking about...) Here it's just a relatively easly lilt up to his falsetto.

Sorry. My being a singer (albeit in the classical vein), I'm inclined to talk about vocals.

On this album, I'm actually not sure who did what, as he had so many guests/friends working on it.
I will say, of George's playing, that his slide stuff was always very pretty. I'm thinking particularly of the playing he did for Saltwater by Julian Lennon.

Perhaps'n it was just not their bag. They were havin' fun pissing in to the wind playing with all and sundry so why not? :)
