I think it was a misunderstanding plain and simple. Remember that musicians are very sentimental and moody individuals especially very talented people, i.e., Brian May! LOL!
But the very exceptionally talented two that Bowie and Mercury are and were may have made for some extreme jealousy and misgivings.
Bowie redeemed himself at the tribute, I thought at least.
