Janet Jackson changed everything that fateful day.
Live TV and Radio now had delay, just in case a steep fine came down as a result of a "malfunction".
And these grand performances were going to be carefully scrutinized after so many people were traumitized by the The Great Boob of 2004.
What is and is not broadcast is going to completely change now because of this.
Oh, wait. Never mind.

Here in The Netherlands we have nudity on public networks. It doesn't raise any eyebrows

...except those of the bible belt, which goes from Zeeland to Groningen, and is a significant factor. Remember, they're the ones that put half the CU, the whole SGP and about a third of the CDA in the house every time elections come around. So the puritans have a voice in Holland too, though it is usually not as loud as in the US.

...and we call ourselves "The Land of the Free"?
Where is my freedom to see some tities?

I remember they wanted to ban Greek statues there...
At least you lot didnt have Mary Whitehouse. Virtually nothing got past her and her cronies.

Fuckin' conservative/religious right-wing people.
I'm glad they threw the fine out. Stupidest thing on the planet to have ever assigned it. Not only has it made EVERY half time show since that one completely stink (hard to get excited and interested in a half time performance when the performers themselves look as though they are about ready to be sick out of fear that something will go wrong and the FCC will get them in trouble), but it was an accident. Guess what? Shit happens. You deal with it and move on.
I am an American (and I say that only to clarify this next statement as I am NOT defined by my nationality in any way) and I honestly cannot understand the American obsession with nudity. I mean, really? It's a pair of boobs, yippie. I understand guys like that stuff, but as pointed out earlier the level of obsession found in Americans is ridiculous. Several of my international friends who have visited the US can't understand it either. Maybe it is all tied into the puritan founding morals of "sex is BAD and sinful! Nakedness makes you think of sin!" (anyone ever seen that Black Adder episode from season 3 where his puritan relatives come to visit and see EVERYTHING as sinful? That's a bit like what the first settlers of this country were like).

Hey, look, someone else has had their name disappear!
How do we fix this? Profile editing is rather...impermanent.
Edit: Maybe I fixed it?

Marvellous episode!! Blackadder 2 it was. Lord and Lady Whiteadder, the most fanatical puritans in Europe. Blackadder - British comedy at it's best a great lesson in history.
During my recent US trip I was also confused my the obvious freedoms that allow people to do most things to excess but coupled with an undertone of righteous virtue telling folk not to do it.
I guess 'we'll all have to stick forks in our legs' as a form of punishment :-)

I couldn't have said it better.
But not only did this affect TV, but communication in general. Radio stations changed their programming, internet radio got a huge jump in ratings, Howard Stern even got some outrageous contract.
Now the supreme court has come back and said "Never mind, you didn't need to do all that." It'd be nice to see what the pricetag for all this crap ended up being.

Oh just wait; the next president is going to be saddled with the BIGGEST budget deficit EVER in US history. I'm sure that one of the candidates will not have a problem telling us exactly how much money that wasted...
