[QUOTENAME]MasterHistoryGirl wrote: [/QUOTENAME]Indeed TM, and the reverse is also true if you will grant that. I have known some "uneducated" people who were brilliant.
But assuming things about people's education or intelligence based on little or no information is dangerous I trust you will grant. And that's all you've done with everyone on this site, myself included.
So how are you any better than you accuse any of us of being?
yes, sorry i often overreact, i just get annoyed when people automatically dismiss and ridicule things because its outside of the normal and accepted thought meaning sheep who just think some things are possible and everything else is false.
The way im "better" is that im openminded to check out both sides and then decide what makes sense instead of right away dismissing things without even investigating it or logically thinking through it.

Not a big fan of Alan Bloom but this thread reminds me of one of his quotes, "Only Socrates knew, after a lifetime of unceasing labor, that he was ignorant. Now every high-school student knows that. How did it become so easy?" The idea that students learn nothing at university is an opinion that only someone who has never been to university could come up with. Well-run university courses teach students to question everything, and they give them the skills to do so. It's true many students do not take advantage of their education, instead looking at it as a shortcut to a "good job" but that's hardly the fault of the educators.

Look, all university is is PROGRAMMING, they give you books, you read the shit, memorize it and then throw it up on the exam paper and thats it! you get your degree and you are now "smart"
you havent done shit yourself, they give you what to read, the formulas, what to remember and how to calculate things and you just memorize it.
There are people who do psychadelic drugs that are 1000 times more smarter than a university professor and actually know things that really matter, like why the fuck we are here and what is our purpose.

That is not my experience of university. I've been to four, in three different countries, and none of them do the type of rote-learning that you describe. Either your university course is functioning incorrectly, or, more likely, you are a Walter Mitty type who doesn't know his arse from his elbow. Nothing you have said on QZ would lead me to believe that you have any type of education worth speaking of. It appears to me you wouldn't recognise a book if one dropped on your head, and that you base your knowledge of life on what some idiots have put on YouTube - the mecca for gullible idiots and scam artists.
Yeah yeah, I'm a sheep, blah fucking blah, but if I am I'm a well educated and well paid sheep and I wouldn't trade places with a village idiot like you for all the wool in Sweden.

Boy did you pick the wrong person to say that to... !
You know, I did study media for a while there. We got rather analytical (and critical) of television and the news media. They didn't feed us anyone's version of anything; they told us how to figure it out ourselves by recognising the devices and codes that people use in the media to make us think or feel a certain way.
Put simply, for better or worse; I walked out of that class a very changed person. I physically cannot sit down and watch anything, or read any newspaper, *without* having the urge to break it apart and wonder who made it, what their agenda is, etcetera.
Critical thinking. Look it up!
So anyway, there's that way of doing things...
And then there's you - the guy who believes anything he sees on Youtube.
I am willing to bet good money that I could mock up one of these amazing videos loaded with 'truth' and you'd fall for it.
PS. Lay off the DMT.

@ Holly
He clearly has never been to university. I've tried to explain to him several times that what he "thinks" university is and my experience with it over 7 years is completely opposite. Like you, I've never been "assigned stuff" and "never examined issues"; hell, that's all you do in history. You chose the issue, you do the research on your own, examining it from all angles (and TM, there are more than 2 sides to a story. My research has always contained at least 3 and the only reason I had that few is because of time constraints) and you determine what you think about it. Your profs don't have to agree with you, in fact most of the time they won't. But that's the beauty of it.
If he'd truly been to university, he'd know that. He clearly has merely completed high school and assumes that university is simply a replication of that. (Apparently he also didn't go to a high school worth it's weight in anything if that's the kind of education he got)
Though I will admit it's fun to get him wound up and watch him go off and spew insults at others; provides a good laugh.

Bullshit.
I can't think of many courses in any institution I've been to where you simply spit out what you've been fed by the textbooks or by your lecturer.
I dunno what university you're going to, but I bet the ceiling leaks and the principal carries a broom.
