Again, no one assigned these people (and others I covered, this is a VERY short list of the people I talked about); I PICKED THEM MYSELF. And when I picked them, I always read at least 3 books on them all, so that I could get a 3 dimensional view (typically one book praising the author, one book vilifying the author and one book which placed them within their historical context and was as neutral as possible), in addition to reading original works by the authors themselves.
5. I chose research works on the rise and subsequent fall of the Valois dynasty, again from my own searching. Ok the thing you are talking about is a PROJECT you had to do and there you are given certain freedom to choose books etc but what about the rest of the time at university? they didnt have a program for you to follow? they all have it. You have to follow their programming, study it, throw it up on the exam paper.
