thats not true... BBC Do record the multitracks, BB king played live on the bbc, and when it was released, the multittracks were remixed, there are a lot of elton john recordings that as well are remastered from the multitracks...

Well its not impossible that they've found the multitrack - they'd have no reason to tell us!

It is when one didn't exist in the first place!?
Well, fair enough then.
It seems odd to release this incomplete show, which doesnt have a multitrack, ahead of other stuff which is supposed to be in the archives complete and with multitracks for a proper 5.1 mix, but these days the releases are never what you would expect!
Its a 70's show though, and thats a massive step forward!

This is indeed great news, the first Queen release I've been excited about for a few years!

In the past few years they may have recorded things to multitrack if they were looking into a DVD release of something, I can almost guarantee you no multitrack recordings exist for BBC recordings from the 60's through to well past 2000. Bit of a pointless discussion though - because, for the tenth time, no BBC multitracks exist for Hammersmith. If a multitrack recordinging has suddenly surfaced, it would have been done independently of the BBC - the chances of this happening though are extremely slim.

Well, they didn't bother going back to the multitracks for Wembley either - they produced a pseudo 5.1 mix instead.

I hope they will do the same for Hammy 26/12/1979. Those 2 Hammersmith shows are essential Queen shows and deserve an official release. I'm glad we'll be having the 1975 one in the shops soon!:-)

It'd better come with an apology for the appalling and inexcusable foot dragging involved .....

I'm old-fashioned. I'll wait until the DVD gets released to criticize it.

How do you explain the existence of 2 DIFFERENT RADIO mixes ?

I'd imagine one of them was the TV mix - I haven't heard more than 2 mixes of it and have never read anything about there being more than 2 mixes available?
pittrek · Member since
Negative Creep - I'm really surprised since all 3 mixes were shared here.
So to sum it up
Mix 1 : the TV mix as used in the original OGWT broadcast and all other rebroadcasts. Mono, and the sound switches regularly between "close" and "distant" if you know what I mean, it gets "distant" between the songs.
Mix 2 : the mix used for the BBC radio broadcast and all other rebroadcasts until 2005, perfect stereo, but weak drums
Mix 3 : the swedish radio mix from '05, almost mono, but perfect drum sound.
There are many small differences between mix 2 and 3, for example the count of echos etc

I would assume that it is the 2-track mix they've been working with, but you would be amazed at the technology around these days. You can literally take a stereo mix and turn it into a multi-track (well almost)!
I think this may just be the first DVD to be released where I am pleasantly suprised with the sound.

HAMMERSMITH DVD?
[Response to questions about the possible future DVD release of Christmas Hammersmith show- see
LETTERS]
I will have to check the exact technical status of all this. Of the portion which went out live on the
night, I believe we have it all ... and it can all be restored to good quality, in sound and vision. But
the portion which we played after the the transmission ended, as a "thank you" to the theatre audience,
was only recorded in sound, I think ... the cameras had stopped rolling. The other questions, I will have
to check. As for Blu-Ray - well, I kinda think it won't apply, because the original camera shoot was not
Film, or Hi-Res, as far as I know. But then, maybe I am missing something. I know the footage WAS
transferred to film, but not very well !! There were errors in registration, and I seem to remember the
whole thing ran at the wrong speed! I'll check, before I get something completely wrong ... I have not
yet looked at the footage, though I know Justin and Kris are well into it.
It's been on the cards for a few years now, but what's stopped it coming out is the fact that the multi-track master tape for Now I'm Here was either damaged or missing. Obviously they've found it now or done some sort of work-around.
Expect it to be 16:9 version.
No multitrack recordings exists, as it was recorded by the BBC who record live straight to 2 track. 2 live mixes were done on the go - one for the TV feed and one for radio. And of course it won't be in widescreen?! I think they've learnt by now that you don't do go fucking around with aspect ratios of archive material, especially when such a process will amplify any limitations of the original footage!
Come on mate. QPL are a law unto themselves, and Brian has seen the Japanese widescreen abortion, er broadcast and he likes it, then who is to say what he won't do with HIS material !!!!
Well, multitrack masters or not. i heard a few years ago that Now I'm Here was missing hence it had been put on the back boiler.
Anyway, whatever the problem was, it's coming now and that's all that matters :)
