Why would anyone transfer any cassette tape at 96kHz? Aside from the fact on a cassette there will be no audio content above 16khz (anything above that is 100% hiss) , chances are the type of mic used wouldn't even have that range and you can't hear above beyond 18khz anyway! There's no point preserving tape hiss.
Someone also claimed "You definitely do hear digital artifacts at 16 bit, as the recording is so good to begin with" - this is utter bollocks.... no human, not even a seasoned mastering engineer, could realisticly identify a 24 bit from a 16 bit downsample. I can understand wanting to archive an analogue recording in the highest digital spec possible, but there's no point distributing something like this recording in such high definition.

But I agree with you.
In a pro recording studio, higher bitrate and sample rate absolutely does make a difference. But with old cassettes? Absolutely not.
