But.. there are idiots who will convince themselves it is real. Good luck to you all. If you are happy then crack on :-) ===============================================
It's obviously a faked effect, but they've tried it successfully with the Bo Rhap video (where have you been????) and an awful lot of cinema films that are touted as 3D are shot 2D and processed into a 3D effect. Obviously you know even less about 3D than I do, so stop being a cocky sod. =================================================================
Was about to say the same thing. The most blatant example being the Star Wars films being converted to 3D. It takes time and work, but it's becoming a common practice these days. In some cases, it can be really well done, so, colour me interested on this idea for an old film concert.

As for the rainbow concert, apparantly it was shot on PAL 2" video tape

Are you sure? I've heard it was properly filmed, from numerous sources, including Brian's soapbox.
He said the Rainbow, Montreal and Budapest shows were the only shows they properly filmed - just those 5.
And I wouldn't doubt it - the Rainbow film was shown in the cinemas throughout the 70s. ------------- Yes, i also toght it was filmed in 35 mm but Gary Taylor said "otherwise" on the Rainbow Post... Here a quote of him: " he shows were actually shot on 2" tape, which was the best quality format at the time."
If they could release these shows (mainly the complete rainbow 1974) it will to be the best live release in Years!

As long as Budapest is slowed down to it's correct speed/pitch I will be happy. That issue has always marred that concert

Well - an average fan can correct the pitch of the audio or the speed of the video + audio on a home computer. There is no excuse to release video with "PAL speedup" in the 21st century

No, it won't, it'll be gutwrenching to see. Turning an analog 2d recording into a digital 3d film gives a result comparable to a black-and-white film that's tinted (colored in) later on. It reduces visual quality instead of enhancing it.
What would be far preferable is a frame-by-frame restoration of Rainbow, similar to the process used on Birth of a Nation, where damage to individual frames is restored by using directly adjecent frames. This would apply, to a lesser degree, to Budapest. A 3d release would just be a waste of money.

Goodness....is this "ComplainZone" or what?
You will get Budapest in 2 D - so why all the negativity about them trying to make it 3D as an extra???
Budapest was filmed with so many cameras and many of them were constantly moving, which makes it easier to create good 3D effects. So why put it down before you even saw a result? No one has to go and watch it in cinema....

I hope they stick in more shots of the audience in the Rainbow film - It looks too much like a soundcheck to me.

Thank you so much for the link, Raffy. Did anybody else follow the link? They talk about a concert for an audience of two thousand people for television purposes and they mention Pink and Tom Chaplin, if I recall well, as possible singers. But what I was delighted about was to read about studio work on a "rediscovered" track, altough they might refer to Michael Jackson tracks, which would be old news by now. See what google translator did of second paragraph of page 4:
"And when it comes to album releases is impossible not to think of the infamous unreleased, so desired by fans. Brian confirms that there are, although not many. Moreover, he argues, if so many things have been discarded there must be a reason. In any case, just in recent months he and Roger have been working on a new song, the two only recently rediscovered. He does not specify when it is published, or in what context, but we hope that this happens very soon." Cheers,

I'm pretty sure i've seen clips of Rainbow on film (?).
Anything shot on SD video tape (broadcast or domestic) would NOT benefit from a high def conversion (especially 2" video from the early 70s!).
Even when it comes to film, it would have to be AT LEAST shot on super16mm, again anything less and you would see no difference. The BBC did serveral concept tests in the early days of HDTV.
'You cannot make a silk purse out of a sow's ear!'
Also, how about some of the promos that were originally shot on film? If the original negatives or film reels still exists, then maybe these could benefit from a HD overahul? Probably unlikely as they would have been converted to video for editing and final output
WATC (although looks like 8mm to me!) I Want It All Don't Stop Me Now Bicycle Race AOBTD (again looks v low res 8mm, poss even video)
Any more?
There wasn't many as production costs in film are much higher than video tape.

Standard definition analogue is still higher definition than standard digital - which is what most DVDs offer (and sometimes less than standard) due to the amount of data people try and cram on to them. Almost all DVDs show signs of digital artifacts - which are obviously not present on analogue material. The current digital masters of most DVD releases are far higher quality that was is commerically released as the files are compressed to fit the format.
I'd rather see the material in it's original transfer quality (albeit remastered, but not compressed and downscaled for a format which isn't big enough to accurately store visual and audio content in any quantity) with lossless audio, than an image littered with digital artifacts and mp3 quality audio.

All I'm saying is, if they do release Budapest again, the speed/pitch better be corrected. Otherwise it will be a complete waste of time.
As for the defence of: 'well, you can just slow it down yourself' ....If you have to tamper with the running speed of an officially released product to prevent Freddie from sounding like a chipmunk, there's something desperately wrong.

but how are they going to stretch the picture ? dont forget that everything was filmed in 4:3 ....

All I'm saying is, if they do release Budapest again, the speed/pitch better be corrected. Otherwise it will be a complete waste of time. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< The Budapest video plays a semitone too fast due to the transfer from film with 24 pics per second to video that demands 25 pics. So the easiest way for video producers always was, to simply play the film with 25 pics per second when transfering it. But in the meantime technology went on and it should be no problem to do it right this time.
My hope for "Rainbow" is, that they still have the full versions of all those songs that once were edited into this weird medley of Father to Son/Keep yourself alive/Liar. And what to do with all the vocal overdubs.....leave them in....mix them out......I'm curious what they will do and I'm looking forward to it.
