The intro and chorus in Broken Open recall bits of the Gary Jules cover of Mad World more than Wicked Game for me, though I get the comparison you're making. But I just can't...I mean Wicked Game is an exceptional song and Chris Issak wrung angst and desire and heartache out of every last note. It's haunting and beautiful and consuming the way the best music is. Lambert is better at the quieter material for sure, and he may hit a couple of sweet spots in Broken Open, but it's not even in the same league as Issak's song and performance, let alone in the ballpark.
I've taken your 'reminds me that Chris Issak song' much farther perhaps than you intended, but it's the incongruity of the pronouncements and associations around Lambert that always disconcert me. His career has thus far been a string of opportunities he's hasn't earned and gambles on him that often haven't paid off. The latest iteration is apparently a leap from 2000 seat theatre venues full of adulatory fans to....Knebworth park. Stepping into the shoes of...Freddie Mercury. It's completely bizarre. But for the distorting lens of television and c-lebrity and media vacuums none of it would even be.
