Adam Lambert's second album "Trespassing" has debuted at #1 on the US Billboard charts (so much for the shots some have taken at his flash in the pan status) but most importantly Lambert becomes the first openly gay artist to debut at #1 in history.
It will be interesting to see how it fares in Europe.

His flash in the pan status remains unresolved at the moment. 77,000 copies were sold, a figure about which Billboard noted:
"Trespassing's" 77,000 start is the smallest sum at No. 1 on the chart since the tally dated Aug. 20, 2011, when Adele's "21" sold 76,000 in its 12th nonconsecutive week atop the list. "Trespassing" has the smallest sales week for a No. 1 debut since Amos Lee's "Mission Bell" started in the penthouse with 40,000 on the Feb. 12, 2011 chart.
In other words, he's extraordinarily lucky he's running with a weak pack at the moment. But more importantly, who were these 77,000 copies sold to? There was and is a relentless campaign by the 'Glamberts' to manipulate his chart positions for the album and singles through mass, coordinated, multiple purchases, gifting and donating of CDs. Highly organized on all social media and on a dedicated website called adamlambertstorm.com
Here's just a little of their manifesto:
GOAL Week 1 - #1 At Billboard HOT 100! Pull up a chair, cause we're gonna be at #1 for awhile!
IMPORTANT TO NOTE Gifting downloads to Charities is not an Option. When the album is released we can donate hard copies to charities from Amazon!
WHY Until the "casual fan" downloads begin, and radio play kicks in, it's the Hard Core Fan Base that needs to drive the sales to get BTIKM to #1 at Billboard! Then the buzz and promo will begin to drive the sales!
HOW
Open an iTunes Account - You may have more than one iTunes account per computer. Each account needs a different email address. You may use the same credit card.
Definition of Sale? Sale = Any Download That Is Charged To Your Credit Card or Pay Pal.
In the USA, to count as a sale, you can only download BTIKM once per iTune account. If you try to download again, you will receive a message that you have already downloaded that song. They are happy to download that song for you again for Free, but guess what? Free does not = sale!!! So, what to do? You want to download songs and iTunes won't let you! Dang!

Multiple similar threads on the official boards and elsewhere around the internet. This is a bunch of well meaning but obsessed fans trying to run the music business from their couches. As you read up above they truly believe that until the rest of the world sees the light on Adam they have to personally hold the torch and make him number one. Whatever it takes and however it can be done. 5, 10, 20 even 50 copies of his CD for some. It's completely, utterly bizarre. Obsession meets middle age buying power. Nobody with a shred of honesty should be in here bragging on this completely manufactured "accomplishment".

What's his sexual preference got to do with anything? In the UK acts like Erasure, Culture Club, Marc Almond, Bronski Beat all had no 1 albums I'm sure.
Besides, Freddie was actually openly gay, but because he didn't use that to define his work or career, or bang on about it, people actually almost overlooked what was right in front of them and refused to believe it.

...Not to mention that the other points are pretty pointless as well.
The least selling #1 debut since last year?
Fans buying multiple copies?
Wow, I guess that really proves he didn't get to #1 fairly!

anywho - 77 000? I guess the timing of release has alot to do with it then.
didn't Van Halen's new album sell 200 000 and got to #2?

I'm not a fan nor basher.....but, regarding so called closet sales, Brian Epstein never ever ever influenced The Beatles chart position with any of their early releases......

Indeed, I can't see the relevance of a connection between men who like to suck penises and chart debuts

Yup, Queen fans have never ONCE tried to manufacture sales right? How long have you been a member here? Besides, why exactly does it matter HOW a chart position is accomplished?

Oh that's right, nobody cares about homosexuality any more, I forgot about that bit, especially with gays still struggling for equality. For an openly gay artist to debut at #1 is certainly something to take note of.

Maybe, if you're gay.
For the rest of us who could really care less what you do with your privates, it really doesn't matter too much. In rare circumstances, I guess it could mean something. I'm sure NBA star Rudy Gay is happy to get credit for all those jersey sales even though he's really not that good.
The first Black artist... ok. The first woman... ok. These are cultural events of note. The first gay artist? Um... not so much.

have to disagree ^^^^^^
in UK law there are 9 strands of equality. gained their place as a "protected characteristic"
each gained their equal rights in law through lobbying, civil rights activists and campaigns...
therefore, by consequence, each Protected Characteristic is an equally important part of a person's identity...
the 9 strands are: Race, Religion, Sexual orientation, gender, disability, marriage/civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, gender identity and age
so none have less right to "celebrate" their status as first "mormon at no1", "bisexual on the moon" or "transgender bouncer"
