A lot of people have quit their bands, but not many faded into complete obscurity by choice.
Grace Slick is probably the only other one I can think of.

i agree. but fact is fact - he retired from the biz. he owes us nothing. we should respect he has retired.
after all, who would honestly think they have a right to keep contacting the electrician who rewired your house....19 years after he retired?

I totally agree with the last couple of posts.........let's just be happy with what he left us in his 20 or so years as an active member of greatest band of all..........
Interesting comparison there to the electrician that fixed your wiring 19 years ago or whatever.............hey, John was an electronics wiz, right?? Maybe that's what he's doing, secretly working as an electrician...........:p

That picture is about 15 years old now !
And I hate to break it to you, but nearly every man with a pulse in a civilized country has gotten a lapdance, rock star or not..

I`m simply not into that "he is too fragile" attitude about John...to me it`s more like he had fallin out to someone with a PhD ;)

Even your resident KingOfRhye has gotten one..................can't say I didn't enjoy it, either! >:)
And I'm not even a big strip bar goer, at that..........
If Deaky wants to have a little fun once in a while.............why the heck not........as one part of the 'sonic volcano' that was the rhythym section of Queen for about 20 years, I think he deserves it.............

Of course there were arguments. After Freddie died, Brian And Roger tried to kickstart a solo Career, leaving John with nothing to do. After the Made in heaven album the same thing happened. In '97 John must've been sick of all the pointless one-off collaborations And opted out. Queen was going nowhere And John had no influence or substantial work to do.
And Yes, that is depressing. The last years with queen were pretty quiet because of Freddie's disease, so he was basically waiting for work for 10 years at that point. With '86 being the last "busy" queen year. John was a creative mind, it must have been very frustrating.

He could easily have got a band together, or joined one looking for a bassist. I'd have loved to see him out playing some funk and soul Motown type stuff which is what he would really have loved, and would have been great at. (check out his bass playing on 'The Letter' wiith Brian on guitar and Joe Cocker on vocals from the Prince's trusty concert in 1988).
You can't blame Roger and Brian's solo careers for him choosing not to do something too (if he'd wanted).
