I do disagree Brenski, "The Works" was a very popular album, back in 84, and back on track from the disco / funk feel from "Hot Space".
You cant deny the brilliance of : "Radio Ga Ga", "Hammer to fall" "I want to break free" & " Its a hard life" together with "Machines"
i think its a pretty hot album, and much better than "Innuendo" or "Made in Heaven",(where the band got lost in a fog) but that is my personal opinion.

I'm gonna have to disagree...The Works was not their best album, but certainly not their worst. It DOES have some filler, yes, and it does sound a bit dated, but to the bands credit, ALL of their past albums sound a fair bit dated. Doesn't mean it sucks. But I think for 1983/84, the sound was VERY relevant, and I'd say at least 2/3 of the album was pretty damn good! [/QUOTE]
Most of their albums sound dated in a good way, while their mid 80's albums sound dated in a bad way.

I'd counter the claim that ALL their albums sound dated...the 80s ones have possibly fared worst, and are 'of their time', and maybe the first three also carry trademarks of that era, but A Day At The Races and News of The World could have been released yesterday, both in terms of the song writing and the brilliance of how they still sound sonically so fresh.

As I too can see the similarities between HTF and LMIYHA it would be interesting to hear one segue into the other.

The Works is a great album. It has some great tunes on it.Too bad it lefts out I Go Crazy and Let Me In Your Heart Again. Although this last one probably doesn't suit together with Hammer To Fall. I Want To Break Free's single remix is way better also.

The IWTBF production is so uninspired. Hate that damn drum machine.

Of course it's a pop oriented song, but it's a great one!

opinions are rarely much more than conjecture. wonder what brian/roger's opinion would be of those early/mid 80s albums these days?
Bri would definitely lament the lack of guitars, and Roger would hate the use of syn drums...
and one thing indisputable - and that means even you gerry & viper - regardless of what you think of the songs themselves or the quality of the song/writing & playing - the production quality of everything from 82-89 is fucking terrible.
Note Gerry: I said production quality. so if, you're coming back with a counter argument - i would suggest you saying "why" you disagree - from a production POV

Brenski: i do not come on here for argument sake, but i will answer your post.
You say from a production point of view Queens albums from 82 - 99 were crap! Queen had Mack who worked very hard on the albums and he did a good job as well as working with E.L.O.
I can not see anything wrong with the production on the albums and i trust Queen, as fussy as they were with the production of any album.
I would say the production of "Live killers" was iffy in 1979 but the 80s albums were great.

I have to agree with gerry on this one. Queen albuns may sound a bit old, but not that old. The production is very good, even by todays standards.

Reinhold Mack was engineer on ELO's albums - Jeff lynne was the producer - which is why they sound so great, and don't date like queen's 80s output

Stop nitpicking brenski, Queens albums are much better produced than some groups.
Some of todays artists albums sound terrible, the sound is far too loud and distorted.
Paul McCartneys "pipes of peace" album was terribly produced because the sound was just too loud the needle on my hi-fi back then kept jumping of the grooves!
lol

http://work.chron.com/differences-between-music-producers-engineers-25047.html
While many music producers are also good sound engineers, sound engineers don't necessarily make good music producers. The main difference is that while both professionals have a healthy understanding of the technical aspects of music production, producers also have a hefty dose of artistic and creative vision to make a recording the best it can be.
Producer
A producer is the creative leader of a recording session or album. He oversees the recording, mixing and arranging of tracks and songs, advises musicians on how to approach or play on a track, helps artists select which songs to record and enhances individual tracks. Often, a producer will play an instrument or add sounds to a recording. An executive producer performs many of these functions, but also oversees the recording budget, hires session players and oversees nonrecording studio personnel.
Engineer
A recording engineer is a technician who operates the soundboard and other equipment during a recording session, under the supervision of the producer. They also set up studio and recording equipment. An engineer's main job is to use her technical skills to bring the producer's and artist's vision to fruition. She also is often responsible for mixing recorded tracks and making sure the final recording is free of any unwanted sounds or noises.

not with decent equipment it shouldn't. a good balanced/weight adjustable tone arm/cart cuts out most "jumping"
