Oh, come on Gerry. Maybe that was true 50 years ago or so - but we're in 2015. Most Americans nowadays are at least tolerant of gay people.
I still can't believe that the OP deals with that stuff at his school (the AIDS thing). It's crazy.

Yeah! After all, it's not like there's a gay singer who almost won American Idol and is now singing with some aging Brits and is more popular in the US than anywhere else........oh wait........

If you all read the authors story for this discussion you will plainly see that homophobia is on the rise in schools, across America and comes from the parents.
I can just see a childs american father saying to his child as he watches Freddie on tv "your not watching that faggot so turn it off" Americans are very homophobic as many of them are extremely religious& massive church goers and you get many saying "we celebrate adam & eve but not adam & steve" Homophobia has increased here in the uk across schools and socially.
You guys are out of touch.

A section of people have always been interested in Freddie's sexually and the fact that he died of AIDS. That section may be bigger in the current generation, considering what they are exposed to from a young age, but I believe people like that have existed always, in every generation.
I think I have said this here before, but I myself held a lot of negative notions towards gay people. But that was only till music (Freddie, and many others) won me over, and my perspective changed. I think a lot of people don't give themselves that chance.

It's not true that most Americans are homophobic, and it's not true that all Brits are cool with sexuality, race, gender.
There are wonderful people and total dickheads in every country.
I know quite a few Americans who don't give a damn about sexuality, race, gender, who are open minded, tolerant, intelligent, you know, decent normal human beings (whatever normal is). Equally I know a couple of total wankers from America too.
I know quite a few Brits who are arrogant, narrow-minded, right wing, homophobic, racist, loud-mouthed and downright awful to be around. Equally I know some wonderful Brits.
One tends to find that most people are fairly middle of the road and tolerant, and that the minority of trouble makers have the loudest voices - be it in the media or any social situation. It's nothing to do with nationality.
Oh, yes, there is the Christian Right in America, but don't be fooled into thinking there is no open-minded tolerant liberalism. Yes, Britain is seen as a bastion of common sense and liberalism (from within her own borders.....) but lets not think there isn't the right wing here. I say 'Christian Right' in America because that's what it's known as. It's really nothing to do with Christianity and everything to do with the fact that a small loud mouthed number of people love to hide behind the Bible for their extremist views, rather than just admitting that actually they're total arseholes. Happens in every country with every ideology and religion.

your question: "do you think the younger generation only cares about freddie's aids status?"
My answer:
It's impossible to answer.
Maybe some of them do, maybe some of them don't.
Is it important what the other kids in your school think about Freddie Mercury? If they like Freddie. Good. If they don't because he had HIV/AIDS. Good too. Who cares?
I grew up in a time when it wasn't really cool to listen to Queen or to say you liked Freddie Mercury. Most classmates thought they were all gay. Gay was bad I suppose. About all kids in school were into grunge or eurohouse / eurodance / early hardcore.
It didn't make me think gay was bad, It didn't make me stop listening to Queen or start listening to the grunge or house rubbish.
Be yourself. Fuck the Freddie haters. Fuck the gay haters. Queen is a great band. Freddie was an amazing singer, composer and frontman. If those kids don't want see that just because he died of Aids, they are missing out on some great music in their lives. Not you.

I think this boy, miraclesteinway, went to the Oxford university. But when he entered to the university, instead of choosing some career, he said: "Teach me to write comments".
