Promo clips project [AOBTD added!]

Since a proper Blu Ray release of promo videos doesn't seem anywhere close, I decided we should do something to improve the viewing experience. This meant tracking down the best quality version(s) of certain promo clips and making them clearer, sharper and more film like (those that were originally shot on film, obviously).        Majority of the stuff is sourced from 1997 Greatest Flix promo DVD. Hammer To Fall for example is sourced from GHV 2 because David Mallet made a fresh film transfer (though he cut it to 2:35.1, *but* it has more frame on the sides compared to 4:3 version) and it looks better than anything else. Same thing for Radio Gaga (haven't got round to it yet). Your player will scale it to your monitor as necessary, so no black bars inside the file.                                                                                             Radio Gaga was probably the most extensive video so far. I used the GVH DVD. It required replacing all the Metropolis scenes with a higher quality version, and degrading it a bit to make it look similar to the 'car scenes'. Even with degradation it looks miles better than it did originally, so no worries. Also, some of the wide scenes were originally squeezed so I had to stretch them to match the 16:9 frame and look natural. Generally, aspect ratios change all the time throughout the video but the file remains 16:9, like the source, with 4:3 footage being pillarboxed. And then there's the rest of the usual process of making the image a bit sharper and better, etc. But that's hardly worth mentioning. Added 3 audio streams from the DVD - DTS, PCM and commentary track.                               .

I'll have to use Chin's reply because it appears I have reached a limit of pictures per post. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ AOBTD added. I thought the frames are blended due to conversions but upon closer inspection that doesn't appear to be the case. Someone clearly thought that motion blur would fit there as a nice creative choice, it was applied when they edited it back in 1980 on tape. It's a typical frame blending artifact. But EVERY frame is blended. So that's my conclusion - motion blur on purpose. We can't avoid that so we done what we can. The image is a lot brighter and more colourful and a bit tighter overall. . We Are The Champions added. Again, just like with AOBTD, all the frames were originally blended so nothing can be done about the odd motion blur look. Somewhat fixed the intro & outro of the Flix by inserting the GHV footage. And the rest is the usual process. . I'm Going Slightly Mad added. A good source. Made it slightly sharper, slightly clearer. Removed rainbowing artifacts (the random colour spots which is often a problem in video tapes). That being said, it's not just B&W'ed, the original colour tint (ever slightly green) remains and the coloured bits remain as well obviously. .

Would it be a good idea to announce what sources you intend to use beforehand though?

just look the video, and it's phenomenal. The only problem is the aspect ratio, you could do it with the 4:3 next time, instead of the 16:9. Anyway, beautiful project. thanks a lot

^ I'm not familiar with IWIA available in proper 4:3 apart from letterboxed versions (which was used here too). So no useful information was cropped off, only the black bars on top and bottom. Anyway, glad you like it.

Amazing idea! I spent many hours in the past searching for clips in best possible quality. I'm super excited about this project.

This was taken from Greatest Flix 1997 DVD.
If anyone has other sources of other videos that can compete for great quality, please contact me.

I think the Laserdisc looks better than the '97 Promo DVD myself.
Just a personal opinion though.

If there is a "film aesthetics buried underneath the video tape treatment", as you say in another place, there is also an aesthetic of the illegal shares (I mean one can spot this kind of things).
This site and your share are not illegal, as you probably know. So it's not a good idea to promote the trend of hidden link in PM. Unless you like to see people begging.

I think yes, if I remember correctly that promo dvd is in 4:3, i will check it asap
