Stage performance colour footage is in 16:9.
B/W footage in the middle is in 4:3 and is cropped from top and bottom on GVH2 DVD.
So best way to make a proper aspect ratio is to rescale original 4:3 b/w footage to 16:9 to match the stage performance footage.

Or just leave it the way it was originally edited (in 4:3)

Who still has a 4:3 screen? That letterboxing is annoying, to me anyway.

Which period are you going to cover? I would guess 1973 with Keep Yourself Alive to 1999 with the Rah Mix of Under Pressure.

I'm planning to cover film sourced videos for now, which means mostly 80s stuff plus Innuendo. And only if they are good enough quality to begin with.

I don't have a 4:3 screen, but I find cropping more annoying myself.
I'll be interested to see what you will do with the 4:3 letterboxing in Radio Ga Ga.

Gaga will likely have to be 16:9 with 4:3 parts pillarboxed. It is also likely I'll have to use GVH DVD for Gaga because it features the newest film transfer, David Mallet must have done it specially for that DVD. Same thing applies to Hammer To Fall, but they made it 2,35:1 which I'm not sure yet how I feel about that.

This site and your share are not illegal, as you probably know. So it's not a good idea to promote the trend of hidden link in PM. Unless you like to see people begging.[/QUOTE]
Are you really just afraid to ask kindly, because you never actually contribute anything to this forum beside shitty posts like this?

B/W footage (Freddie's and Brian's faces) is actually 1:1 AR.

Kurgan, do you also watch 21:9 movies letterboxed in a 4:3 ratio?

I don't think anyone is disputing the fact Brian's face is the correct aspect ratio in CM's processed version, just that it's cropped.
It could be scaled to fit (rather than cropped) as cmi suggested, although that of course would be difficult to put into practice as it crossfades at that point.
FYI, I have a 21:9 screen and watch 21:9 movies in 21:9.
What's that got to do with the price of eggs?

Oh I didn't realise that until now

That's ok, I accept your humble apology.
This is the price you sometimes pay when converting what is essentially a 4:3 video to 16:9.
The original video was quite artistically edited in that it crossfades from 4:3 letterbox to 4:3 pillarbox.
You cannot easily retain that effect if you convert it all to 16:9.

I totally forgot about that part. I could have easily just rescaled it as CMI mentioned. My apologies.

If it was a cut it would be easy, but it crossfades.

It's not that easy to make, and some parts of screen of both scenes will be lost during the transition.

What do you guys think about AKOM and IAHL aspect ratio? Would you prefer it cut to 16:10 thus not losing any frame or 4:3 letterbox? Making it 16:9 would involve too much cropping.
