I'm not excusing it, I'm ignoring it. I'm gonna rant for a while - I live in a country where we have a basically fascist party in the parliament. And there is a pretty real chance their head will be our new president later this year ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marian_Kotleba ). He started as a pathetic clown who made public meetings (from time to time in imitations of nazi uniforms) and the few people who went there went there to laugh at them. So what changed? The media started to talk about him. Daily. Police started to go to their rallies and he ended up arrested every single time, and every single time he got released because it's not illegal to be an ass. So people, who ignored him or laughed at him suddenly started to feel sympathies for him, simply because they heard about him every single day and they have seen him getting arrested without any good reason (since he was let go every single time). So of course, during the local elections he became a local governor, and the media freaked out even more, PROMOTING him even more. So guess what? He's in our parliament since 2016, with some very special people (like a man who got caught on camera throwing rocks at a muslim family who just passed by one of their rallies) and there is a very realistic chance he will be our next president.
I seriously believe there are just 2 types of "correct response" to people who spread these types of beliefs, depending on what is their motivation
1) Ignore them. When they find out people ignore them, they find something better to do. Giving them attention means making them feel that they are right even more, and trying to stop them is creating new people like him
