You want to read the diaries of a man who probably did not write the plays credited to him?

Nah, I wouldn't read them. I would, if I was given them, keep them somewhere safe, and maybe later in my life I would read them. I'm reading Peter Freestones book at the momement, and that is quite enjoyable, and is quite an insight into Freddies life. But, it is from Peters point of view, so Freddies life and mind written in his own words, it would be wonderful for him to freely express himself through words only. But as others have already said, he expresses himself best through his music, and thats enough for me =)

NEVER burn ANY book. Burning books is totalitarianism already: it means censorship. [/QUOTE]
Ok so maybe I wont burn them then. Still wouldnt read them though.

There, that's better.
Anyway, I'd sell 'em to the highest bidder, and of course keep a certified copy. But I'd leave out a few pages of the "good stuff" and give them to Greg Brooks for the Archives.

Exactly! That's how the entire Oxfordians vs Stratfordians vs Baconians thing would come to an end.

Well...say if there was one and only one copy of his dairies i wouldn't read them but wouldn't burn them either...this is because Freddie probably felt enough to write them and they might of ment alot to him.. so i would keep them but not read them! :D

Hmmm. I'd buy them for sure, and then *think* about whether or not I should read them. Then, after 6 months or so, maybe I'd break down and read them.
I bought "Mercury and Me" on Ebay about a year and a half ago, and haven't read it...but I somehow don't think I will.
Probably not a good example to use as comparison, but oh, well.
Maybe a better example: all those "personal" video snippets that showed up on QZ about a year ago; I downloaded them - but then waited for months to view them...and now I kind of wish I hadn't.
Of course, they're on YouTube now.

Me too. I think Greg deserves to own the archives, especially since he has been living in the archives for so long.
Anyway, I probably wouldn't buy a stolen diary. It would be like buying anything else that was stolen.
But, if Mary, or whoever is making decisions regarding Freddie's estate, sued the publisher and got the money from the sales, then I would have to buy it and see exactly what Freddie wanted to write down. That is because I believe that celebrities (or adults) don't write things in their diaries that they don't want to be a matter of public record eventually. However, if something is too personal, then it should get burned.
Also, I think it takes a certain type of person to want to record their life on paper and I don't think Freddie was that type. I think Brian is more the type to reflect on things. Just my opinion. Don't know for sure.

I'd only read them in total privacy so I could whip my dong out when appropriate.

Now be honest in your answer here.
As for me, I'd burn them but I am just curious to know what you guys might think cause I often think that certain questions that keep arising could be well and truly answered i.e what was Bo Rhap about or who gave him Aids, etc.

It's a silly small sighted question. Freddie is a historical figure. Even if you dont release them publically they shouldnt be burned. The presidence set include diaries of people like George Washington or Ben Franklin that historians read (I could say Anne Frank but that seems too cheap) as an insight of what a historical figure was going through during a struggle like that would be too valuable for history.
Though that point of view cheapens Freddie as a man, a real human being. #hich is probably what he wanted (who's to say what he really wanted for sure because you're not in his head nor am I but I assume he did appreciate privacy from his actions) but its a case of taking the good with the bad. He probably wanted to make his mark on history and he did just that, the price to pay (it's debatable if its a small or large price) is that things such as a hypothetical private diary would be of interest to people. Think about it, if he did windows or was private decorator or whatever, would anyone care about his diaries? Again, it's taking the good with the bad.
I believe the reason why is more than just tabloid trash, gossip instinct most people have. I think a lot of people would be more interested in getting close as possible inside the head of genius. The same reason a diary of Mozart would be highly interesting to many on a historic level.

I think I would try to stay away, and would probably last a mounth, max....
Then I would probably sit down with plans of only reading a couple of chapters, and have it finished withen the day.
Same thing happened to me with Harry Potter 7.Really didn't want to read it, but I gave in after a day.
Then again, if I was in one of my moods, I might just track down the person that stole the diarys, and get his published...(oh, the taste of revenge)

Wasn't it Freddie who said he didn't read books - it was a waste of time - and, oh, he was going to get in trouble for saying that. I can't imagine him writing a diary because he didn't care about the past - it was all about now and the future. What I wish were available are outtakes of videos/DVDs and/or home movies that had snippets of his sense of humor. I have read that directors and others thought he was the funniest man they had ever met, and by the end of a session their sides ached from laughing so much.
Would I read his personal diary? No, yes, yes, no, yes, no, no, yes, I don't know. When famous people have a lot written ABOUT them, sometimes it is refreshing to get the person's TRUTH.

kdj2hot, its not a "silly small sighted question" at all - its purely a hypothetical question about what YOU would do based on assumption that Freddie wrote diaries for himself and you had them. Its got nothing to do with Freddie as a historical figure, or to cheapen him as a man. Nothing at all.

Just look at the first two pages of this topic, and see how many good posters have left the forum. A shame, really.
