I think the whole of Brixton didn't know what was meant by "fit women" that nigh!!

Darren - If you who I think you were, then yes! We were standing right next to each other before the gig and some people got inbetween. YV was directly in front of me.
D
Sounds about right! Is UV the short lady with the dark curly hair?

You were defo wearing a blue shirt, and there was somebody there with a back-pack unzipped?
Y
Yes, that was me and Martin wore his queenconcerts.com shirt. Looks like I knew half the audience in person and the rest from the internet:) Too bad you did not introduce yourself to Martin, it would have been nice to say hi.

If Queen are NOT doing it for the money...but only to be able to play live again....then why did they hurry SO much? Why going on tour SO fast? Why not going in a studio, rehearse seriously for half a year, give Paul a chance to watch the Queen dvd's and learn the lyrics and the timing? Why not prepare properly and get a decent and full show on the road? With a lot of Freddies material? Or the songs that you can read in this forum on different topics? This is all done too fast, with far too little preparations. It woulod NEVER have happened like this in freddies days! Now Queen (?) are abusing the shows as rehearsals while we pay high prices for tickets to a show that should be fixed and finished and ready! Now we pay for improval try-outs....as in the Brian May . com is stated that they use the shows to get better. When Queen went on tour in the old days, they never did it before it was perfectly trained and was a finished product that they could charge people for to buy entrance tickets. In my opinion they had better wait half a year and train hard, practice and rehearse more, and also come up with some new and unknown songs as a reward for the fans and to make up for the high ticket prices.

"Too bad you did not introduce yourself to Martin, it would have been nice to say hi."

I know :-( I only knew of Martin by name (haven't seen a picture), so I didn't say anything in case I was wrong. When we arrived, it was 5:10pm and the que was filling up fast - we were very suprised as we thought we had got there 'early' and would have time to find a place to eat - that didn't happen! So it wasn't until we got to the venue I had a drink, and then had nothing to eat until we arrived back at our friends house, so I was a bit dazed.

Bass- i have to say i agree with a lot of your points although maybe not quite as vitriolically!!

1. Set list - disappointing

2. Performance - adequate but not sensational

3. Paul Rodgers - did ok but needs more work.

4. The one moment of pure joy was RMT doing Car.

5. Taylor pissed the gig. The one that really 'put it in'.

What i would say is and this may have been mentioned but what fucks me off immensely is that if you break down the Queen tracks played you will find that virtually ALL were played on Brian or Rogers solo tours. Point - so did it really take that much effort to get this thing together.

More so what fucks me off totally is the idea put forward that us 'hardcore' fans are in some way asking for too much. I understand the flow of a show by a major artist because thats what has got you there but we are talking about a band that sold millions yes millions of most albums so the audience is not dictated by single hits a la some poxy 80's band.It ISN'T some bizarre sect that can't appreciate the later stuff but just believes there needs to be a better recognition of what the band mean. Longpig touched on it with the Bowie axis.I came out of Brixton elated yet confused and the people i spoke to felt the same.I left the Brixton singing 'Told my girl i'd have to forget her rather buy me a new carburretor behind the mixing desk with some great guys (one in a HS t shirt from Elland road that we both attended) Where were the tracks we expected / longed for / drank discussing / analysed? Only one.........I'm in love with my car...........

i rest my case.
P
SIGH....what I see here is a bunch of fans analyzing, comparing with Freddie and the old Queen. Wanting TOO much of the old Queen in the new band!
Maybe you should think a bit more about the organisation of such a tour, the money the band ACTUALLY gets from a price-ticket, the timeslot (Paul had planned gigs with his own band remember?).
You're forgetting about the musical, the 3rd 46664 concert, Paul not knowing the Queen repatoire, the fact that only 10% of the crowd are devoted fans, the rest is general public.
The fact that Roger and Brian did not plan a large tour, but demand was higher that they expected, so it became full scale. What the F*ck did you think they would gonna play???? Fairy Feller's Master Stroke? Marche of the Black Queen? Millionaire Walz?
I'm going to 3 concerts, and have a damn good time! And scr*w the critics, fan or journalist! :-)
I'll be having a ball, short nights, f*cked up voice, not matter what setlist they will play!
No matter what note they will play or sing false.
This is not just about particular songs, or who's singing them. these concerts have simply 2 great positive points:
they're mostly QUEEN songs, and Roger and Brian are playing.
I'm looking forward to seeing them live, together with other queenfans(friends) who I know.
To go outside afterwards, with a satisfied feeling, chatting (if that's still possible without a voice :-) ) with fans i know about the seen gig.

Old Queen: press kicks ém in the *ss, fans love them
New Queen: press love them, fans kick ém in the *ss

What a strange world this is....
P
quoting Basje:
"give Paul a chance to watch the Queen dvd's and learn the lyrics and the timing? With a lot of Freddies material? It would NEVER have happened like this in freddies days!".

Hmmm, Basje, I can remember that you said that you mailed Paul not to act too much as Freddie?
If you'd done more research, you'd have known that Paul deliberately messes with the timing! Because that's his way of singing.... check brianmay.com
Freddie's days? These are not Freddie's Days, Paul is not Freddie!
And why sing a lot of Freddie material? Queen is not just Freddie's songs.
YES, the setlist could have been a bit longer, YES, a few more (Freddie) songs would have been nice.
But it's not the end of the world...
Losen up, and enjoy! After all, you paid enough bucks for it! :-)
I know it maybe hard for guys like yourself. Having seen so many Queen concerts, you're kinda spoiled. So this kind of reaction is quite logical.
For people who haven't seen the old Queen live, it's easier to adapt and enjoy anything thats thrown at us.
P
Well said Proton, we live in a strange world, my take on the tour for what its worth, enjoy and make the most of it.
I was at Brixton, sadly its the only gig I am going to due to sell-out gigs and money. Brixton was great, came home with no voice, sore arms and feet, but had a wonderful time. What made it special I think was seeing all those waving arms in the air again, being part of a massive choir, made up mostly of Queen fans, meeting people and making new friends, and seeing 2 members from my fav band back on the road, playing live.

We must treat this new chapter in the history of Queen as just that, a new chapter, you cant bring back the past, and none of us will forget it ever, Queen of old is locked away in our memory banks forever, and move forward with the new Queen.
No matter what they did setlist wise they would be wrong, this in a way is a comeback tour, so all the hits would/should be played. If they played less well know songs, that only us old die-hard fans would know, then the new, younger fans, who have never seen them before would not be happy as they would want the hits that we all know and love.
Once the tour is over then maybe a new cd, if they did this first, and played songs from it in the tour, that would be wrong for a lot of people, again because they want to hear the hits.

As for people saying Roger is not playing like he used to, I have this to say, 1) he, like the rest of us is getting older, and cant do what he used to, 2) he has not played a full long set like this since 1986, even on his solo tours he did not play the drums all the time, in fact hardly played them at-all on the electric fire tour, 3) he looked and played bloody good to me.

This may be the last chance we get to see them both live, so make the most of it, for those that say its not Queen, just go and enjoy, re-live what it was like to have your arms in the air clapping and singing, along with thousands of other fans, look around and feel the togetherness of it all. I did and it felt good, my only regret was that I could only get 2 tickets, I would have loved to share the experience with my son.

Lets hope this is just the start, judgeing by Brian, Roger and Pauls reactions at Brixton, and how overwhelmed they seemed to be by our reaction and responce to them, I think they have only just begun.
M
Darren! You should have said hello. How many different people can wear a queenconcerts.com T-shirt?! :-) I met a lot of people there, in fact I stood next to a guy whom I didn't recognize at first but then he spoke to me and I found out that I met him at the Queen Heaven laser show in Munich and he gave me a setlist from the FM Tribute 2001.

I also remember the woman in front of us that was screaming "John Deeaaaacon", I thought I'd kill her.

I put a couple of very short Brixton MP3's on my site, if anybody is interested... It's just samples, to show what the gig sounded like.

(I'm sure my webhosting hates MP3 so I wonder how long they stay there).

As written, i was very disappointed about the whole, but also that i hope that they will improve, add, change, extend, grow, rehearse, and change it after every show into a good show with balance and spectacle and gimmicks....and listen to what song WE would like them to perform.
Ofcourse i like to see them play live again. But the openingshow of the greatest and most obscure comeback in musichistory ....it wasn't that great to be called that....maybe, the last shows of the tour will be what the first should have been. I thought that Queen didn't do it for the money,,,,so why did they make such a hurry? why didn't they take proper time to study and rehearse before going on the road...now the shows are used by them as rehearsals, but we have to pay for them...we pay for a show, not try outs...and i think the first 10 shows or so will be used by the band as such...wich i think is not correct. There are few people out there who ever had the chance to see them live before, and in that perspective i am spoiled rotten yes...but even then should they have practised a bit longer before hitting the road. Mow the show is on the road, and i will look forward to seeing them again a couple of times...and i hope they will knock me off my socks with a blazing show, with entetainment, vreativity, gimmicks, stunts and interaction...and a frontman that is onstage more than backstage, and who knows his stuff.
The voice is awesome, the drums are better thsan ever, the guitar remains the absolute nr 1 of all times, but it takes a hell of a lot more to make it a show that is worthy to carry the name Queen on the poster.
The 3 on the left should become more part of the band, than being a band separated from queen on the left side of the stage.
Ofcouse they are brilliant, but by all means, they should work themselves into the show, not stand aside and just accompany the Queenies...
they had better use tapes then ! Queen were 4. This is 6 on stage, but the 6 now were less than half of the famous 4 in the past....and that i hope, will improve and change from now on...
Will they dedicate tonights show to the pope?

I must say that taking part in the general discussion is very educative...my opinion is mine, and maybe some of you learn to see things from a different perspective too, i certainly did. Thanx to you all for joining this topic with all your different views and opinions...it is truly very refreshing!

Well, that's what a forum is for right? :-)
About this discussion: I have the feeling that your expectations of the new band are a bit too high... The new Queen can never be what the old Queen was! But there is room for improvement, I agree on that :-) Lots of room in fact :-)

Hey i'm a fan, but one noticable absence were piano songs. i just thought some of them shoud have been thrown in.

the best queen songs are where freddie played the piano chords and brian did amazing solos to tie it all together, like killer queen, or the millionaire waltz...

disappointed that they were not included. also really disappointed stone cold crazy was not played or AOBTD

anyway queen always disappointed people with their setlist, like wembley 86. how many piano songs that day, not one full one
