Oh my god, grow up people!
Oh just having some fun.........relax!
QUEEN + paul rodgers........
THAT is how THEY call this tour.
If they want to use the name QUEEN, they should live up to the expectations of the fans, who are drawn to these concerts, paying vast amounts of money for tickets, travelling and staying there, with a spectacular show that is worthy of having the name QUEEN on the posters.
The name QUEEN has a magic about it, because of the history of the band, their back-catalogue and the live performances that were always packed with entertainment, audience interaction and new daring, inventive and creative stunts and gimmicks.
The fans hope to get something close to the famous history and name that Freddie established during his days. Ofcourse i know there will NEVER EVER be a 2nd Freddie, or somebody coming close to what he could, BUT....that doesn't mean that the band as it is formed now, shouldn't do their very best to play a decent 3 hour show, with more of Freddies songs in it, and the songs that WE, the paying clients who make them rich, the customers so to speak, want and hope and expect to hear!
Don't Stop Me Now. Somebody To Love. Save Me. Spread Your Wings. Keep Yourself Alive. Play The Game. Teo Torriate. Friends Will Be Friends, Dear Friends. Killer Queen. Sheer heart Attack. ....etc etc etc...all are missed. But in a 1.5 hrs show and an encore of 3 short songs plus the stupid 11:43 minute intro you can't get them all in...but if they would give a standard and normal 3 hour show like any other top-act does, it can be played...all of it. Easily.
The sentiment that the name QUEEN touches within people, makes them want to come and see the show.
But if the people on stage try SO hard NOT to make it something like, or coming close to something you could call a QUEENshow, then the dissappointment will come. After the show in Brixton, the hall was empty within a few minutes, and at the gate were the band would leave, there was only a handful of fans waiting. Brian didn't even want to sign one item. It was a crazy atmosphere after the show, and people were leaving feeling.......? shattered....!?
If they use the name QUEEN to sell tickets, then we may very well demand a QUEENshow back in return for the expensive tickets. Now they are doing everything to make it the farrest thing away from a QUEENshow. They had better called it : The Brian May Band meets SAS-band, featuring guest drummer Roger taylor and Paul Rodgers, THEN this setlist and all would be just. NOT QUEEN and this wannabe greatest comeback in the music industry of all times....
The show must go on...ofcourse...but this is NOT a show that is worthy of the name QUEEN if it is pulled off like this. 1/2 Queen is correct.
I do love to hear the fireplace screaming and tilting the house...i love to watch Roger beat the skins like a devil, and it is always fun to see jamie, spikey and miranda on stage, but by NO means were they part of a band called QUEEN on stage. They were merely co-orchestra on the side, with hardly any part in the show as bandmembers. Put Brian on the left, Jamie on the right, miranda right from the drums, and spike left from roger ...then there wouldn't be this 3-some band playing their own show between them on the leftside of the stage.
Merchandise is strange too...
this chicken like crest...shows that QUEEN are chicken? Not daring enough to play Freddies songs and a full QUEENLIKE-SHOW with pride? they think and talk as if it were wrong to play a QUEENshow LIKE WE WOULD LOVE TO SEE THEM DO?
I think they would make more people happy by doing just thát, than this Brian May Band spinn-off without all the QUEEN ingredients that the name QUEEN + paul rodgers promises.

Good post, Rien.
btw I've just read Basjes report and his disgust about the Queen show. Why don't you put your money where your mouth is and let Brian know what you are telling the folks here on Queenzone instead of kissing Brian's ass at the gate where he took the time to shake hands with his fans?
Actually don't bother, because Brian is aware of things.
Isnt this a forum where u can talk bout things? Basje felt terrible bout the concert so? Hes not allowed to say that inhere?
Its HIS opinion! like you have ur opinion! He doesnt speak outta of QUEENS name now does he?
Shaking Brian hands(or kissing his ass to use ur words) has NOTHING to with an opinion at all!
I stick to my opinion why I dont go to any show at all...because to me its looking at a tribute band.
Are u going to bash me for my opinion too? And no I didnt shake Brian hands or kiss Brians ass.
the last posts after my reaction were NO WAY an opinion anymore about the brixton show as this topic should be replied to, but merely other people judging other people and having their narrow-minded opinion ready and start throwing names and a verdict ....
my piece is a naming all that went wrong. And it would have been a joy to see a "new band" taking the history of Queen ina new direction. But this setlist, the minimum part of Freddies music in it, and the bad way that his songs were performed may be said aswell to be a big diddappointment. If there would have been a real and teamlike united band on stage instead of the spike, jamie+miranda one on the left side, and brian roger and paul on the other side, okay, but they weren't a BAND. Children running up and down behind Roger, technical things that went wrong, the fact that Paul as a frontman made absolutely NO contact with the audience, but looked more like a shy japanese karaoke singer in a bar making timing- and wordmistakes time after time, and letting the crowd take over to camouflage his unability to do it right may be mentioned. I have seen Queen probably more often than you lot who judge the fans like me who did and call us hung and stuck in the past...
For all the fuss with the organisation of the tickets, the late start, the stupid never ending intro...than NOT a Queensong, 3 of Freddie, 6 or 7 of Paul....and the rest only for pocketfilling royalties from Brian and Roger? THAT sucks ! It is a NOT courageaous but coward setlist, safe and easy money. Why bother to play Freddies compositions or even bother to record them and release them if THEY are NOT the ones to profit from that financially? Freddie wrote 57% of all songs, and always filled half of the show. IF they use the name Queen for this tour, they should play more of the songs from the man who made and was Queen. Also if they don't make a penny by doing so. I predicted that it would be like this in this forum before it all started. Look al the musical. 3 freddie songs, the rest are all credits to the guys alive, filling their pockets. They can do whatever they choose, but the abuse of the name Queen in respect to Freddie is shamefull. They had better call it Brian and Roger and Paul + friends on tour. When using the name and fame of Queen in ther name of the tour, then Freds part and portion should be bigger and more diverse. Why not play somebody to love, play the game, save me, spraed your wings, killer queen, don't stop me now, and so...why not listen to what WE want to hear? WE pay for the tickets and we are the customers here...they should live up to their clients wishes...but instead they play only that what makes them richer than they are, and put Fred aside in the enormous part of queen that he was and all his beautiful contributions... he dropped from 60 % part to less than 14%...and that is not how it should be, when remembering that Paul executed Freds songs poor too...
I was wanting to see the new band. There wasn't a band. I wanted to hear the new stuff. There wasn't any. I wanted to hear and see the great Paul Rodgers...he wasn't that great, i can do that better ! much better ! And Mirko from MayQueen is sure as heel a much better entertainer, and entertainment darlings....where was it? Were we enterteained? I will never forget the emptiness and crazy atmosphere after the lights went on in the academy....
And yes i know it was the first? ( after rehearsing, and 3 shows before...mmmmm?)
And i hope thet will adjust and improve. I will go and see them a few more times....but if at show 18 in Holland it is still the same poor quality and mistakes and setlist, i will sell the tickets to the other concerts i think, as this is everything but a satisfying show with respect for and to the man who was Queen.
People calling me this and that for writing my own personal, hard but honest feelings down have more than likely never had the priv
Finally, does this mean that Basje's recordings (I refuse to believe he didn't make any) will be cheaper as he perceives it to be sub-standard?
Oh and even he did record the show..You wouldnt even think bout the fact to get a copy huh now do you?
I see where Bas is coming from on a lot of points. There definitely doesn't seem to be much Freddie input into this tour so far....
Thats the thing tho... why would there be much Freddie input? Freddie - very regrettably - is no longer with us. He wont be there to sing the songs or plan the setlist etc - that obviously has to have an impact.
If there was more "Freddie" in the set then no doubt there would be lots of people out there bitching that they are riding on Freddies coattails, that they cant do it on their own. If they DONT have a lot of Freddie.. people bitch that theres no Freddie. They cant win with some people. Just reading the Brixton threads shows that. The one thing about the show that one poster loves, is the one thing another poster hates!
Ah well... I just hope they bring the show here to Perth so I can go see it! :)
Cheers

Well atleast you have the chance to see another one of my favo bands, also a tribute band nowerdays btw. LOL!
To me, it is very clear that Freddie is no longer here, and he IS very much missed. But Queen as Brian and Roger call themselves was the 4 of them. To go touring under the banner of Queen, they should give a Queenshow. This was a far too short, predictable and easy setlist with no surprises or extras. Queenshows were always famous for those qualities. This was a bad version of a Brian May Band show, not a Queen show or anything that could have the name Queen attached to it. 11:43 minutes boring intro, then a NOT queensong to open the show, 90 minutes, 3 encores.
To use the name Queen, the playingtime should be 3 hours minimum. Support-act first. Surprises. Crownjewels. Extras. Spectacular opening. Climax.
bring on the strippers i would say!
This was NOT a show to be proud of. And they played what THEY wanted to play, easy and safe. like cowards. And what they played sucked from a to z. TOO many mistakes in solo's and words and timing. Technically a lot went wrong.
The magic didn't happen. The fire went out.
And we are paying to hear Queensongs, and that was the 4 of them. So the songs we want to hear ( read new topic ) are missed. Ask people what they loved most and it will be Rogers version of IILWMC . Why? because it was the ONLY song that brought back the genuine Queenfeeling and many memories. Even if it was Roger doing that alone.
I read the Paris show was already better. Oh, i do hope to read about changes and improvement after every show they play, and that by the time i see them again it will all be okay. A full 3 hours show. Gems. Surprises. etc...etc...
Then it might be called a Queenshow.
This was a bad try out instead of a spectacular openingshow of what they call "the greatest comeback ever in the musicindustry". Thát it most certainly was NOT. Your opinion is a fair one. And i hope to write a positive and enthousiast piece after my next visit, wich will be Antwerpen. But before i write something positive, they must deserve it ! I am NOT going to be hurray hurray and amen if it was as bad as the Brixton show.

Well, at least Basje is giving his opinion in large detail :-)
Better than some stupid remarks like those critics mostly do in the papers :-)
On the part of the setlist, I do agree that it needs some adjustment, other songs, longer setlist. 3 hours is f*cking long, but 2.5 it should be at least I think. 2 hrs is kinda short.
Basje talks about 90 mins, but I have read several times that it was 2 hours, said by fans and also press said it. some fans even timed it. 2 hours, from when M&M started till GSTG....

Sorry... youve lost me there. Who is your favo band that is coming to Perth that I could go see?
Steve
I fully agree that everyone is free to say what they want here, and others may respond to that.
Basje included. He sure gives a strong opinion about what he feels, his posts makes one to react (including me). He does make a statement here and I appreciate that far more than all those worthless posts about AIDS, homosexuality, useless questions that can easily be answered by searching the net or all those "what if..."-questions.
But I feel he's slagging Queen off just too much. When a whole stadium goes wild of enthousiasm during this show than I feel it's unfair to criticize just everything about this show. I think he should be more objective, but above all he must be himself. There will never be a real Queen show again and we all know it. But I think it's great to hear them play again. This show is a mixture of Queen songs, Paul Rodgers songs and Brian's solo material. I think Brian is the driving force behind this tour and that wont go unnoticed. Even the musical is being promoted during the concert and even I think this is not the place to do that, but it's part of the present success of Queen.
Let's not forget that all those shows we now have on dvd go back 20 years or more. This is a different era.
Sure I miss a lot of Queensongs in the show, just as Basje says. I'm not sure they will change the setlist much but we shouldn't judge this whole tour after seeing only the first (tryout?) gig in Brixton.
There are some special moments in the show, especially when Brian does two tracks with the audience. Freddie is sadly missed during one of those tracks and I think Brian is feeling that too (and showing it).
Above all, we must appreciate that they're back on the road again. There's a whole generation that has never seen them perform before.
About slagging off myself and my site? My site is a reflection of me experiencing Queen. If you cannot stand that, please don't go there. Sure I like all the positive reactions and it feels good if someone likes what you offer. That's only human. And you, Basje, cannot stop talking about your own experiences concerning Queen. You're proud of that and you want everyone to know it. All your achievements. All those things you have wittnessed or experienced and all the things you've bought or all those recordings you have or even made yourself, all those things wouldn't have happened if you just had been sitting at home in your chair. No, you worked for it, spending money for it, even travelled the world for it. You're proud of that and you're damn right about that.
But so am I. I've seen Queen perform in the past, I've travelled to many places as well to see all the things I've seen. Standing outside in the night for hours hoping to shake hands with my heroes. To be part of it and to make dreams come true.
One of those dreams was meeting Brian in person. And I tell everyone I see that the first time I saw Brian after the tryout of the musical was because of you. You're the one that convinced me to go to the last tryout of the musical when we met in London in 2002. We had a great time and I've told this story to a lot of people since. And no, I'm not kissing your ass by saying that, it's just the way it is.
