Totally agree alibat.

Everybody is entitled to their opinion and I respect some comments, but to drone on like a broken record (Queen RIP 1991) becomes monotenous and adds nothing to the post.

I was unsure of Paul Rodgers as lead, but the wierdest feeling was the Freddie Tribute concert as it was the first time I saw Queen without Freddie.

We were in Dortmund yesterday, it was horrible.
Brian and Roger are destroying their names and the whole Queen story.
Who the fuck is Paul Rodgers? Free (except the first Tons of Sobs Album) all crap, Bad Company... the name speaks for itsself.
The only community between Free and Queen is the death of Paul Kossoff here and Freddie there. Thats it.
Did Brian and Roger ever see a Bowie concert lately? Thats the way, how to make a brilliant show in 2005.
Not with poor Paul Rodgers, swinging his Mikro, this was even better performed by Robert Plant and Roger Daltrey.( And I hate it anyway)
The light Show, if can call it so, was poor, a few back videos, thats it???? From QUEEN??? From the Band who claimed to be the Champions of the world?
Please Brian, don´t do that again.
The Musical keeps the Queen legacy alive, this tour is about to kill it.

1) Freddie would be 58 right now, 59 on Sept. 5th of 2005.
2) Freddie wrote over 70% of the Queen songs that cracked the top 20 in the USA & UK. Freddie wrote approx. 47% of the groups overall output... plus he is the image most all public links with the band.

Like I've said before, in the United States... everyone knows Freddie Mercury... one in 500 people walking down the street could not tell you the name of another band member.

If it wasn't for Freddie...where would "Smile" have gone??? They would have been some long forgotten about English band that played a few gigs in the late 1960's..... Bottom line: Its doubtful that we would all have twelve or thirteen "Smile" cds that we charish.... while telling everyone that Tim Staffel is the greatest frontman ever.

What turned Smile (unheard of nobody's) in Queen was Freddie Mercury.

You think its by chance that Queen started getting their sound down, and becoming what would be "Queen" as we know it when Freddie arrived??

The very modest Freddie would never say "Not only I'm I the lead singer, but I made this band what it is...thats right...I'm in charge".

C'mon.... he knew that would just piss the others off.

Brian, Roger + John were all important contributors to Queen... both in sound, and with some hit songs.

But I still feel that songs such as "Tie Your Mother Down" (Brians) Another one bites the dust (John's) and Radio Ga Ga (Roger) .... would never have gotten off the ground had it not been for Freddie.

,,, and as for his own songs... it was the campy broadway, meets opera, meets vaudville, meets rock songs of Bo Rhap, Killer Queen, Good Old Fashion Lover Boy, Somebody to Love, Don't stop me now, Jealousy, ..etc..etc... that for me, REALLY DEFINE QUEEN'S UNIQUE SOUND.

From the name, to the look, to the sound.... Freddie is at least, singlehandedly, 50 to 60% responsible for taking the group in the direction it went.

That kind of means he was the groups leader in a way.

Meanwhile, the new tour... yeah, I'll go see them... its my only chance. I like PR. and Bri and Rog still sound great.

Is it Queen??
somewhat...
Just not the real thing.

But it beats nothing.

So, whithout Brian, Roger and John, Wreckage or Ibex would have been a very big name nowadays?

I think not. I prefer the Smile stuff over the Freddie bands.

Agree at the end of the day Freddie WAS Queen.

Brian Mays importance for queen is not to be overlooked though. Just listen to Sheer heart attack or any of the 70's albums, his guitarwork is fundamental on those records. Or listen to his solo albums to hear how much they sound like queen albums. Also remember that in 70's he was one of the worlds absolutely best guitarists and that he even today is mentioned among them.
Did he become such a good guitarist because of Freddie or because of him being talented?
B
Good question KingOgre. I think it's a case of musical soulmates. Freddie and Brian's solo stuff pales in comparison to their Queen work, because neither is close to as good without the other. Listen how Brian's playing changes from the debut to Queen II. I love the White side, but I think Brian's real Queen sound took shape on the black side, which was Freddie's stuff. Freddie also composed in unusual for rock keys which made Brian's playing sound ever more unique. So did Freddie make Brian better? Absolutely. But Brian's writing in the 70s was second to none, and he probably made Freddie a better writer and singer. I heard that Freddie hated singing It's Late because Brian pushed him so hard on the high notes. Maybe if Freddie didn't have Brian pushing him he wouldn't have been the icon he is. For instance, Eric Clapton is a great guitarist, but try and imagine him playing his bluesy rock stuff in Bohemian Rhapsody or the end of Lily of the Valley. Wouldn't work. The two of them are like Page/Plant, John/Taupin, Jagger/Richards and Townshend/Daltrey. Inseperable, and better together than apart.
You know, good times are now.
K
In many ways I think that Brian is an icon too, his hairdo and his guitarplaying are both instantly recognisable.

I completely agree with you BHM, Freddie and Brian were both virtouso musicians I dare say, but together they also became virtouso music-creators. This is, I think, in the end what made Queen so great.
S
Oh no... I am not saying "Freddie taught Brian how to play guitar"...

Conversely though, Freddie is every bit the paino player that Brian is guitarist... and I highly doubt that Brian "showed Freddie anything on piano"... as Freddie is 10 times the pianist Brian is/was.

Freddie (per the words of Roger Taylor) made the rest of Queen step their game up....

Brian and Roger already had SOME of the Queen sound down.... but it was Freddie who defined it, and pulled it all together... and was 100% responsible for the piano/camp/broadway/opera/choir....

Smile was a decent prog rock band... decent at best.... and obviously the rest of the world agreed with this, as they were a "went nowhere band".

Freddie also needed some quality musicians to help him get out there...so Freddie needed Brian & Roger too.

I feel one would argue though that Freddie (could write, could sing, could amaze a crowd)... with much more force than Brian or Roger.... if this is true (it is) ... then Brian & Rog needed Freddie worse than he needed them.

PLUS... Freddie alone is 100 times the performer that Brian, Roger, John, Paul Rodgers, Bruce Springsteen (insert whoever) is.....

I mean, in 1982... if you went to a Queen concert... you knew you were going to see John Deacon.... but 99.8% of the crowd were there to SEE Freddie Mercury's performance, energy, flameboyance..etc.

Don't kid yourself folks... on a fanatic website (such as Queenzone) ... you may find some people who for whatever reason like Rog, John, or Brian better than Freddie.

But don't dulute yourself into thinking even 1% of the rest of the general audience feels this way...

I love all of Queen...but if for nothing else besides the hit songs, and the over the top live performance... I would call Freddie the public leader of Queen.

Just as one could easily call John Deacon the leader of the business end of Queen...

Freddie was the leader of the band.
