Some say Lennon wanted to change the world, well that's true but only to one point. He was also rather selfish and not quite a peaceful person himself. Have you read John lennon's secret life by A. Einstein(translation for "Las vidas secretas de J. Lennon")?. Well, I read it while being an absolute beatlemaniac and I tell you I was profoundly dissapointed. Not only about the beatles, but about Lennon. They also made wild parties, like freddie, true that they were not gay,but had as much sex as they could with as many as they could(just like freddie, only that they kept that well hid so nobody knew). And it also tells stories about the john lennon's temper, he was quite agresive, he even burnt a journalist's hand when he suggested Lennon to be gay as a joke during one party. (Actually, he had sex with his manager Brian for several years).
So yes, as a lyricist and apparently as a public man he wanted to change the world, but in his private life, no better role model than freddie.
Sorry.

not only that Fred was a better musician than Lennon - Mccartney was a better musician than John as well... with all due respect - Lennon is and was more influential than Fred/Queen - but i think he (john) is slightly overrated....
[QUOTENAME]Penetration_Guru wrote: [/QUOTENAME]Or is it just the fact that there has been a bit of coverage of the 25th anniversary of Lennon's death in the last week, and you've extrapolated that into "every year we get this Lennon stuff, what about Freddie?", failing to remember that there was no hoop=la on Lennon's 24th anniversary?
Yeah, I gotta agree with your sentiment here... Freddie did not influence music and popular culture like Lennon did. Honestly, I can't think of any other musicians than The Beatles that can be played on the radio for days at a time, intertwined with interviews, tributes, etc... and most people never tire of it.

Interesting challenge there! They were completely different writers, but Brian does have some fantastic lyrics. I'd need to listen to some more obscure Lennon stuff before agreeing, because much of May's best lyrics are in his obscure songs.

Many Beatles books are to be taken with a grain of salt, as they are unofficial, and often written by people who want to make a good buck. Paul McCartney only trusts one or two Beatles biographers.
Personal lives aside, even if Lennon's was as "nasty" as Freddie, Freddie was in no way even remotely close to the incredible person Lennon was. Lennon advocated peace in so many ways. BoRhap is a musical masterpiece, but Imagine is a lyrical masterpiece. Mercury wrote nothing like this, because these kinds of ideas were not things he believed in. He was far too materialistic and stuck in his own little world to care about the rest of it. The majority of FM's songs from 1975 onward are love songs! The only truly insightful thing FM ever wrote was Is This The World We Created, but many of the lyrics were probably Brian's. I just can't believe how Freddie has become a role model for so many teenagers when he was really such a selfish person most the time. Lennon was by far the overall better person, and there are backing catalogues and interviews to prove it.

I'm sorry, I don't agree. As I alreday said he was a great lyricist, but nothing else. He just was as selfish as Freddie, only that publicly he gave the impression of being a great man. But it was only apparently, he built an image and we all believed that.
I prefer the true, even if it's not as lovely as a good lie.

And once again, I must note that you have chosen to believe the words of an independent book about the Beatles, which was not authorized by the Beatles. How do you know those stories about John Lennon are true? Why haven't they been documented elsewhere? And if this book was so groundbreaking, why wasn't it in the headlines, like Bob Spitz's new book?

I really don't think it is fair to call freddie "too stuck in his own world to care". He probably did care, but he just wasn't as vocal about it as john lennon was. I mean remember, john's comments did get him into a bit of trouble at times. I like john's songs and everything but whenever I hear a song like Imagine I feel depressed, whenever I hear a song like, say, I don't know Don't Stop Me Now i feel happy and unplifted. The way I see it john tried to open everyon's eyes to all the shit happening in the world and freddie brought everyone away from it. I think it's great that despite all the talent he had he never really took himself as a star seriously and I think that is a great way to live.
I think that Freddie helped me in many ways more than John when times where tough for me because his unique songs took me to another place instead of reminding me of all the troubles in the world, That's what I think music should be like : it should take you away from all of your troubles for a while.
Eh sorry for rambling lol.

Well actually John was also cremated

Imagine how little Fred weighed when he died..bound to generate less ashes than the perfectly healthy (apart from the gunshot wound) Lennon.
Yeah but Freddie's wedding ring would have added weight to it.
Hmm, but did they bother taking the four bullets out of Lennon? If not, those would have outweighed Freddie's ring. On the other hand, Freddie did have 4 more teeth that the average dead Beatle, so it's definitely a good question...

In the States, all we get are those fucking annoying Thanksgiving specials. I don't think the people who have power over the TV networks even know who Freddie is, and I highly dought they even care.
Lennon was a better lyricist, talking bout lyrics I think he bob Dylan and Roger Waters are the best lyricists of all time.
But Freddie was a better singer, perfromer and mucisian than our dear Lennon.
But I can't denie Lennon was the most talented Beatle and that he is a Rock legend.
