It's all about keeping Queen's music in the public's eye, kids.
You, me and everyone on this board have been fans collectively for years. Some of you were lucky enough to become fans before 1991 and can sit here criticizing pretty much everything they've done since. The fact of the matter for Brian and Roger is to keep Queen's music from slipping into the past, remembered only by audiophiles and hardcore fans. This is especially important in the US, where music is flavour-of-the-month and songs are forgotten when the next big single comes out.
Not everything an artist does is for the benefit of the almighty fan, boys and girls. Winning over new fans and trying new things (whether they succeed or fail) is what keeps music alive.
I didn't really know who Queen were until Freddie's death and the Tribute Concert. THAT was exposure for them, televising the concert (along with being a way for fans to be involved). If I hadn't seen that, I probably wouldn't have gotten into Queen as deeply as I have.
Sometimes, it's about preaching to the unconverted. It's not always about "What will the fans like?" The strange mentality that dictates to some music lovers that a band has remain the property of the fan, and that once they try to extend beyond that means selling out somehow, is not one to which I've ever subscribed.
I'm not content to wallow in the past, curled in the fetal position listening to Queen II and moaning, "Why, Brian? Why Roger? Where have you gone John Deacon, our nation turns its lonely eyes to you?"
American Idol is a stupid show, in my opinion, but Queen are not lowering themselves by being on it. Millions of people watch and those millions will hear some great music that night.
I'm wondering what they're going to play. I'm guessing Radio Ga Ga and Hammer To Fall, unless they bring Paul along, then it's anybody's guess.

great post, rhyeking. You're right, it's about keeping the music alive. At the San Diego show, Brian specifically thanked the young people who came to the show.
For what it's worth, I was extremely disappointed to see Mandisa eliminated from American Idol last night. She could have done a great job with numerous Queen songs. (in my opinion, she was the best of the bunch)

Amen to that! I would never have known who Queen was if my best friend hadn't gotten me into the TV show Highlander, and Queen was practically the soundtrack for the show. As I didn't know who they were until after Freddie's death (RIP Freddie), I have collected the old stuff. I live in the US, and we are such a self-centered country that you have to look hard to find anything that isn't American, and if you cool off then America drops you like a hot potato. Most people over here know the basic arena anthems (We will rock you, We are the champions) and almost everyone knows Bohemian Raphsody, they just don't know the other stuff Queen did. Anything that can get them more fans is terrific! I came across a Euphonium group from the Music Building on CMU's campus the other day, and they were playing Bohemian Raphsody. At frist I was kinda upset, because I felt it was butchering it, but then I realized that if it got one more person curious about who Queen is and was and what an impact they had on music, then it was worth the bad Euphonium playing. I won't be able to watch American Idol since I don't have cable right now, but I hope all goes well.
I'm curious about where are our famous defenders of "everything what Brian and Roger are doing" now... Hey, guys!
