i'm not mad at the citizens. i'm mad at barnes and noble and tower records and mtv and vh1 and all the scads of music-related corporations who just DON'T CARE.
Instead of screwing American citizens, why don't you two just get over it? Not everyone is a Queen fan and I can assure you, a great majority of people (not just US citizens, mind you) are not even aware of who Freddie Mercury is.

that's just the point, isn't it though? probably 90% of america knows and loves bohemian rhapsody, thanks in large part to wayne's world, and every single one of us has sung we are the champions and we will rock you at some point. and yet queen itself, as a band, receives relatively little attention in the US.
Just because people have sung Queen songs at one time or another doesn't mean they are hardcore fans. I agree it is unfortunate that Queen are not as popular here as other countries, but then again, I have given into the fact that this won't necessarily change.
I also understand the fact that Freddie's birthday and death anniversary are not "celebrated" here because people simply don't care unless they are fans. The average person on the street, who may or may not like We Are the Champions is most likely not going to stop and raise a glass to Freddie. Sad, but true.
Personally, I just find it a ridiculous statement to say "Screw the American citizens" because their favorite singer isn't Freddie.

yes. i wasn't defending that. i like americans, in spite of everything:) but, you know, i don't think there's something inherent to the american musical landscape, if ya like, that makes it a bad market for queen. i've converted quite a few friends who had only heard rhapsody before. maybe it's naive, but i was hoping someone would take freddie's 60th as an opportunity to spark more interest in queen...especially among us younguns who haven't had a chance to be turned off by some of the 80s discoish material(which, while i personally kind of enjoy, i admit would definitely not be as popular)

I suppose I am in the position where I have been a Queen fan long enough that I have heard this same pitch before. Every year when it's Freddie's birthday or his death anniversary, ppl complain that Freddie doesn't get enough attention. While it's true, it doesn't change either.
Edit: Also I have converted loads of ppl, too. Then again, these people aren't in control of what is played on VH1 or MTV.

Are you missing something? No, but American's are. I no longer feel any confidence in my understanding of this. Before I would write it off to a bankrupt culture that spends it's time watching American Idol and the Anna Nicole Smith show, making stars out of intellectual dwarfs like Tom Green and Rob Schneider. A country whose commercial advertisements would make you wonder how the producers responsible could have enough intelligence to feed and clothe themselves, or even just stay alive. A country which peaked Bohemian Rhapsody at I believe the #9 spot on the billboard chart, but made the Macarena top hit of the year. A country that made Paris Hilton a superstar, shot John Lennon and continues to support and celebrate Michael Jackson in spite of popular belief that he is a child molestor. A country that birthed Rap and country music.
In most areas, I cringe at the anti-intellectualism of American culture. But this still doesn't explain the Queen apathy phenomenon. We will help the ancient Rolling Stones climb on stage two out of every 4 or 5 years to record breaking tours in spite of the fact that their new music doesn't sell that well, but a Queen/Paul Rodgers tour, more than 20 years after the last Queen tour, won't even sell out more than a couple of shows. I'd bet if Freddie was alive and it had just been that long since touring the USA, they still wouldn't sell out every show.
Ultimately, we don't rock like the British. Just look and compare:

My two cents: Queen hasn't been a major force in popular culture since 1980. From a cultural perspective, Queen had 5 big songs. Now they are little to nothing. It's unfortunate, but it's true. Very few artists secure long-time interest in the US, and queen isn't one of them.

Hey, at least there is balance in nature. The Brits can rock all they want, but when they finally get hungry, the tables are turned. I have often humorously speculated that every deep, powerful British song starts off from an artist's deep angst and pain, not from their lost love, but from their extreme hunger for a food that doesn't taste like fresh feces dropped from a sick animal.
