I'm not very keen on rap music. And what's annoying is that pretty much every hip hop video features women with very, very little clothes on, sometimes posing in... certain ways.

And those two songs are some of the only songs containing rap that I like! Waterfalls is more R&B, but I can't remember if it has rap in it. I really like the Fresh Prince theme! And I think that's all the rap I can take...

Yes, Waterfalls did have rap in it performed by Lisa "Left-Eye" Lopes.

Lady Marmalade is a song about a prostitute...using the infamous french line "Voulez vous coucher avec moi ce soir"...which for non-Frenchies out there means, "Will you sleep with me tonight?". Is that the best message these girls can aspire to? Singing about how they are hot and sexy and they want to go out and get laid? What ever happend to brains and accomplishing things for yourself, other than getting every STD in the book?
"Waterfalls" has a good message...but it's also 10 years old now. Rap back then was more innovative than rap now, and most of the lyrics were at least more original.

Lady Marmalade has a good melody, but I agree with you, CMU History Girl, that the lyrics are disgusting. There is more to life than sleeping around. And, I have never heard the Nas song, so I can't say anything about it's drug refrences. All I know is that I don't aspire to be like the women who sang 'Lady Marmalade' and I DEFINITLEY want to keep away from drugs. I haven't heard those songs in ages, anyway, and I doubt I'll hear them again for a while. I see your point, though.

Oh, I should have told you about "Lady Marmalade", the song may have been on the soundtrack to "Moulin Rouge," but it was a 1975 Labelle song because the lyrics are different. For example, the 1975 version lyrics are "he met Marmalade down in old New Orleans..." while the 2001 version for the soundtrack were "he met Marmalade down in old Moulin Rouge." I see your point about the song's description considering the movie has some Cabaret show scenes from the early 1900s.

I have heard a rapper named Immortal Technique who is rather intelligent, witty, and humorous. Of course, like all things rap, it's musically impertinent, but it's entertaining, at least.
One of his works is a tirade criticizing vegetarianism. It's seriously one of the funniest things I've ever heard.
