Okay. So I just finished reading Mercury and Me (I got it this morning) and is it just me or does that book really make you hate Mary Austin? I feel like she betrayed Freddie by kicking everyone out. I realize it was legaly her house now but he wanted Joe, Jim, and Pheobe to stay so I think she should've honoured his wishes. Am I being to harsh?

This is what I think

- 1 Day after Freddie's death -

Jim: "Oh my God, Freddie's gone"
Mary Austin: "Yeah, it's the worst thing that ever happened"

*they cry*

- 1 week after Freddie's death -

Jim: "Oh my God, Freddie's gone"
Mary Austin: "Yeah, it's so sad... BTW, don't you time it's time to go to your own house"
Jim: "OOH FREDDIE, WHY DID YOU LEAVE US?!?!"

*they cry"

- 2 weeks after Freddie's death -

Jim: "Oh my God, Freddie's gone"
Mary Austin: "Yeah, and so is my food... stop eating my food!!
Jim: "Hey, hold on, biatch, I can't get over Freddie's death yet"
Mary Austin: "Yes, you're right"

*they cry*

- 1 month after Freddie's death -

Jim: "Oh my God, Freddie's gone"
Mary Austin: "Jim, I think it's time you leave my house..."
Jim: "OOOOH DEAR FREDDIE!! WHY?!?!"
Mary Austin: "GET THE FUCK OUTTA MY HOUSE, YOU FAG!!!"
Jim: "Rite on, biatch! I'm gonna write a book and I'm gonna talk shite about you. YOU'LL SEE"
Mary Austin: "Yeah, whateva. BYE!"

*Shuts door*
*starts to rain*

Jim: "Yes, it's gonna be a great book BWHAHAHAHA"

Can I steal the book from you so I can form half an opinion...please?

He left the house to her - end of story. I wouldn't love either to share my house till the end of my days with lovers of my ex-girlfriend....

I think that if Freddie and Mary remained so close friends (nearly lovers) even after 1974 (or so)and to the end of Freddie's life, Mary cannot be the horrible person you describe.

I agree with Serry and Elizabeth. If she was so evil why did she get the lion's share of Freddie's estate? I haven't read Jim's book so I don't know the details about Freddie wanting those three guys to stay, was that in the will?

Well, I also haven't read the book (I've been trying desperately to get it though, for a cheap price), so it's difficult to give my whole opinion, but I think that Mary was always there when Freddie needed her, so it's only right that she gets what he left her. Sure, Freddie wanted those three guys to stay at Garden Lodge as long as they wanted, but it wasn't in writing and it was her property.
It's difficult to say, though, because I wasn't there, I didn't see what happened, I don't know what Freddie said to Mary or Jim, so... *sigh* It's not totally fair to pass judgement when you don't know the whole story. So this was just my two cents - don't sue me for it ;-)

I read the book many years ago, but I think you've nailed it. None of us were there, only Freddie knows what his intentions for his inner circle were. Also, it's important to consider that the book was written by Jim Hutton-so everything is going to be skwered to his interpretation of events. That doesn't mean he is lying about anything, it's just that's there's always different versions anything that happens.

Sadly, that book has had that effect on a lot of people. However, when I finished reading it and considered how he bitched about Mary - a person Freddie said he trusted more than anyone - it made me wonder how skewed his facts were on everything else in the book. Dissing the closest friend of a person you supposedly loved shows a severe lack of objectivity and implies jealousy rather than truth and logic.

If anything, I came away from that book disliking Jim and wondering if Freddie knew what a whiny bitch the guy really was.

For those interested in Freddie's will, I think it may be found on this site:

go the the "specials" section and you'll find it.

In my opinion an individual does not deserve any credibility to me that removes a book and counts its privacies with Freddie (when Freddie was what but privacy loved. .)… Freddie I Need You… GABRIEL
Freddie I Miss You.....Gabriel
