So I just finished reading Mercury and Me (I got it this morning) and is it just me or does that book really make you hate Mary Austin? I feel like she betrayed Freddie by kicking everyone out. I realize it was legaly her house now but he wanted Joe, Jim, and Pheobe to stay so I think she should've honoured his wishes. Am I being to harsh?[/QUOTE]

not at all.

the book was very biased.

Freddie was very clear to Jim Hutton and everyone else that he was leaving everything to Mary. She had been with him for 22 years, for better and for worse. Days before Freddie died, Jim asked him about the house, and was told that they would have to work that out themselves.

Jim was not left broke. Freddie left him the equivalent of 1.4 million American dollars today. ($500 British pounds adjusted by inflation). Yet, he complained about being homeless. Freddie also paid his home off in Ireland.

In the book, Jim mentions that Mary opposed many of Freddie's large purchases for Jim as well as his wages for gardening. This shows the level of trust Freddie had in Mary.

Jim and Freddie had a six year relationship. Until the last year or so, the relationship was extremely volatile, with Jim moving in and out and Freddie cheating.

also, another thing to ponder is that Mary had one small child, and another child due at the time. If she moved in her new home, would she want Freddie's friends still drinking and partying there while she was raising a family?

lastly, Freddie knew he was going to die in 1987 (at the very least). He prepared his will, and left Jim Beach to execute it the way he wanted it. He knew exactly what he was doing. He said publicly that if anything ever happened to him, he would leave everything to Mary.

I feel sorry for Jim Hutton that he lost his great love, but I do not feel sorry for Jim that Freddie left him only $1.4 million dollars (today's equivalent),and a home that was paid for. That isn't exactly thrown in the streets and homeless.

Freddy did not cheat on Jim, he was a Saint.

With Jim and Mary we will never know the full story. What I do know is Freddie trusted Mary and left her the house and in the nearly 30 years since Freddie's death and the - what - 50 years since she met him, she's never betrayed his confidence and she's never given any interview that discusses matters Freddie wouldn't have wanted to be public. We don't know much about her as a person because she's never done these things, but I think these facts and obviously that Freddie spoke numerous times of how important she was to him and left her almost everything speak volumes.

Freddie was a very private man and it has been some years since I read Mercury and Me now, but what I remember most about it is that I knew, even at the young age I was when I read this book that some of the things Jim spoke of, truth aside, Freddie would definitely not have wanted anyone to ever know. Worst of all, Jim spoke of Freddie's final moments - the most intimate thing of all to reveal. To me that Jim would do this shows Freddie was right in not trusting Jim as much as Mary. I'm happy Freddie found peace and love with Jim in the last years of his life, but that Jim could reveal some of the things he does in his book and indeed have such things to say about Freddie's closest friend makes me question the depth of Jim's love.

Of course I can understand why Freddie's lovers wouldn't get on with Mary. I don't know her full personality, but anyone who is not only an ex, but it seems Freddie's first proper relationship and the person he is closest to in the world - all of these things remaining close to Freddie and in some ways I guess closer than they could ever get. There must be envy in there.

And as I see it, here lie a lot of the problems Freddie must have faced with friends. Reading shorter accounts by people who knew him - sometimes speak of things like knowing they'd have to step away from their friendship because the power of Freddie's ambition and talent and where he was headed with his career was like some physical force - such that somehow, without Freddie intending it, they'd be destroyed by him if they stayed too close.

But the real impression I get was that even some of Freddie's closest friends must have in some way also coveted him like some precious jewel that in his friendship, they possessed. I explain it terribly. But my point is that even with some of those he was pretty close to there must have been jealousies and sycophancies and ways people related to Freddie and things they desired from him that are not part of a normal friendship and you hope are not part of friendship ever. And those accounts of people who, say were close to Freddie in the 70's, then were not for a decade. Well, Mary never stepped away. She was always there for Freddie and he allowed this. I think it speaks a lot about both Mary and Freddie.

It is hard in this kind of talk to not be overly critical of course. I hate the idea of "Mary is an angel, Jim is awful." or "Jim was Freddie's true love and Mary was evil and cruel." The truth is obviously no person is perfect and Freddie had deep love for both as they were both important to him. I don't question Freddie's love for Jim at all. It is only that some of the things he revealed about Freddie in his book (& probably that he wrote a book at all to be honest) make me question whether Freddie was right to trust him. But who knows how much he did trust him. Love is uncontrollable, all else aside anyway.

I've heard that the house is owned by the estate of Freddie and she has it for 50 years- is that true?

We have to remember he didn't think Jim would live very long. Had he left the house to him, who knows what would have happened in probate

I would say after reading Jim's book that Mary was always a bit fake and a bitch. For a start where was she when Freddie was bed bound ,needing bed changes ,toileting and nursing day to day. That was all left to Jim,Peter and Joe.She was a bit of a groupie, hanger on Freddie could not commit to her sexually. To be left the Garden Lodge all the money and royalties was insane and she still receives royalties now.Wonder how Brian and Roger and John feel about that. Then she throws the five out after one month and so on.I think Jim had every reason to dislike her and if you read the book it makes you very sad for Jim.

I dont like Mary Austin, feels like a golddigger, but when I say this, everybody will cry about it.

What does a normal person, when they got dumped by their loved ones.. They go on with their own life, but she smells the money of Freddie

But hey, that's just me ;)

It does make one wonder about the whole situation of Mary not helping with Freddie's care. Even during that horrible episode after the seizure she didn't bother going over until late morning and stayed for 30 minutes.

I think she got the house because she's the one who picked it out and oversaw the renovations while he was touring.

He also probably assumed Jim wouldn't live long and who knows what would have happened to the house if Jim had died?
