I have read through all the comments and it leaves me with these poignant thoughts. None of us were within Freddie's inner circle, therefore we know not what went on behind closed doors.
One must think that at the time, there were a lot of people grieving and having mixed emotions. That is all part of the stages of grief.
As for Jim's character or Mary's, we cannot go by what people say tit for tat, as we'll never know unless we personally sit down with them and ask them, but sadly, Jim is not around and Mary is not one to divulge too much to us.
Another thing, many of you claimed she didn't work, etc. Not true. She was made a member of the management. Freddie himself asked her to stay on. She chose to remain as his friend for those life-long years. That says a lot about how much Freddie loved her. And to add validity to that comments-there is evidence by Freddie himself in interviews, etc, that he loved her and off to another digression...
There is evidence he loved Jim also, but he stated many times over, that Mary would be burdened by the home. He knew what would happen. He knew all of this. As he penned his will out, did he not foresee all of the drama? I liken to fathom, that yes, indeed so, he certainly did.
Wills and death make people into things that they are not. But it also reveals people's true nature. Notwithstanding as I know not
Mary nor Jim or anyone else within the circle, I can attest that I can only base my judgment on that of Freddie's words over and over. How "none of his lovers could measure up to Mary." How they had a "common law marriage", and what not as I paraphrased it out.
All I know, and all I care, is that I adore Queen and I loved/love Freddie. I was born in 1976, so my entire life I heard Queen on the Radio. I also saw the band through the good, the bad, and the ugly parts of it. I saw AIDS take away Freddie Mercury and his becoming a fragile shell of the man he once was. The Saddest video I ever watched and still think so is "These Are The Days Of Our Lives". Especially the ending.
I cannot explain in more simpler terms that "We don't know what went on behind closed doors" nor shall we ever. If we believed everything that people told us, then "the world is flat", we come from "aliens", etc. No validity whatsoever.
My dears, I leave you with this final wording, "Better one truth, than a thousand lies", Darling, look within yourselves, and there is the truth.

We personally don't know what has gone on behind the closed doors. Unless we personally sit down with either Mary or Jim; who sadly isn't with us and ask them personally to explain everything to us, we may never fully comprehend what really went down after Freddie died. We are only going on tit for tat gossip and the words of one versus another but without both of them to justify their actions without them being both present to get their full story we may never know.
We cannot make a judgment on someone's word against another. I prefer to base mine on character and truths.
I do know as a fan of the band, that multiple times, Freddie made references to how his lovers could never "measure up to Mary", or "that she's the only one I trust", etc. That said, think upon those statements for a moment.
I also know personally that death and wills are a tricky thing. That after somebody dies, the sometimes "true nature" of people comes out. That said I am not saying anything about Mary or Jim, but I am saying that a tell-all book, etc. doesn't seem to be that great in the taste of the person you loved. I mean if it were I, I'd tell of the wonderful times I spent with someone and leave it like that. I wouldn't divulge too much info of the most personal because to me, that is private and the world should not be privy to every detail of mine and my loves lives. But then again, myself, I am pretty mundane. And as a Freddie fan, I know the man was pretty Private.

I am sure that as Freddie wrote out his will, he explained to the benefactors of the will, his decisions for what. I am positive he mentioned it to them at least several times. And as stated prior, I am positive if he wanted them to continue on in the home, he would have made those provisions. But he made other provisions. Provisions of financial security. I think that the amounts he left the others were more than fair. It was stated before that they were treated awful, do we actually know? No, and besides that, grief goes through many stages, so in that, we have to remember that they all were grieving a great loss.
My unbiased opinion is this...until we sit down with all sides and truly have a tete-a-tete with them, we will never truly know.
And lastly...the best piece of advice..."Better one truth than a thousand lies" because of that dears, the truth lies within ourselves, darling.

1) No, the house, the Mews and all his personal possessions were completely bequeathed to Mary.
2) No, Freddie’s will was written up on August 5, 1991. It was Signed Sept 17, 1991.
Freddie was not told of Hutton’s diagnosis until Nov. 5. 1991 For all Freddie knew at the time he wrote up and signed his willHutton was healthy.

It an OBVIOUSLY lie that was told. Even Phoebe hedges his words when he talks about it and say that Freddie allowed them to “hold the expectation ” that could leave the house when they were “good and ready”.
So in other words, HE PERSONALLY never heard Freddie make that promise. He was told that by someone else, likely Hutton.
Even HUTTON doesn’t claim to have heard Freddie make this supposed promise. Only that Freddie used the term “our home”.
Of course, Phoebe says that he referred to the house as “our home” to Phoebe too.
Self-evidently that is reference to the fact they were currently living under the same room, not some implied co-ownership.

She then became an officer of his companies and literally ran his companies and personal finances for him.
