Hey look I totally don't drink that. And also what is Kool-Aid.
No seriously, I'm not a member of that brigade. I was actually a bit miffed with Barb's post because I started this thread expecting a semi-sane response from maybe a couple of people and instead got a bunch of horse shit from Mrs Pork Butt. << That name is aimed at the loser up there, not Barb by the way.
In any event it's small chips. I don't think a bunch of people on a forum can change anything and that's not why I made the fuckin' thread...

Hi, Zebonka12, my dear!
How are you?
I was very happy that you created the thread and I really appreciated it. I didn't step in mainly because I just don't know what to say. In face of so much violence I usually fail to say anything. Violence and lack of meaning, in my worldview, walk hand in hand: in face of the brutality of Iran's police what can I say? Worse: what can be done? People either suggest bombing the country, which would result in the death of thousands of people like Neda, or imposing sanctions on the country, and the civilians would, again, pay the price, pretty much as Iraqi civilians were harmed by the U.N sanctions program back in the 90's. A program that caused so much havoc that even the guys responsible for carrying it out refused to go on - respected and highly-regarded ambassadors just throwing the towel and saying: it's enough. The population is paying too huge a toll and I feel like taking part in the destruction of a whole country. I'm out.
It's too brutal an event not to be condemned and harshly criticized - the Iranian state is to blame. They don't allow free elections from the very beginning: they forbid many candidates of taking part in the elections and then choose the usual intolerant zealots who're not going to pose any threat to the regime's basic tenets.
The violence of the police is just gruesome. Blaming it on people who were out there peacefully demonstrating is very low and ugly. The kind of reaction of Iranian's riot police wouldn't be justified even if they had a judicial order to arrest a criminal - they are beating people with such a degree of violence and humiliating them so ruthlessly that I really can't recall the last time I watched or read anything similar.
I hope you're doing fine. Take care and have a nice day.
Regards,
Yara.

What pisses me off is the suggestion that it's even remotely okay to retaliate against the protestors - violent or not. That might sound silly but consider the dodginess of the election and the (full and supervised) recount that would surely put the riots to an end IF the regime had won legitimately... if only they'd do the fucking thing.
Partial recount? What's the problem; is a recount expensive? Well it can't be as expensive as firing high powered weapons into your own people. These aren't insurgents; they're protestors, and rowdy or otherwise they don't justify deadly force.
Microwave rightly brought up that 'the other guy' is probably just as much a dick, but the point is he's the dick that should've been put into power because that's what Iran wanted. Fuck. Is any of that too hard for some people to get?
For an explanation of my Kool Aid reference, click here.
As to your original post, I was with you there. And I agree that Mrs. Bad Guy tried to ramshackle this thread with utter nonsense and continues to do so.
I was hoping Barbara was serious about bringing back a logical, thought provoking conversation. But then the soapbox came out, she stood up, and proceeded us to tell us why the world is all wrong, Obama is our savior, an untimely George Bush reference, and how I'm a coward for not wanting to die.
Look, my grandfather and some of his friends had to deal directly with people from her country on a beach in France a long time ago. So I kinda draw the line at a few softballs thrown my way from time to time. But this is an isolated event in one country, not an invasion. And I have no respect for the "Support our (fill in the blank)" crowd. It takes more than a magnet on your car or a subscription to Amnesty International (that includes a nifty decal of a candle with thorns!) to make me think you can tell me what is what.
The original topic of this thread was asking if anybody cares about Iran. I have yet to see an answer to that question... a good honest answer. So all bullshit aside, here I go.
No, I do not care about Iran. Iran, as a country. I think it should be split up, at least in half, maybe more. A few of those countries over there could use that. It seems to difficult to get along when you have (1) different religious beliefs and (2) automatic weapons waving around aimlessly. We seem to be able to do that ok here in Texas, but we make you wait five days and do a supposed background check.
It is a shame that people are dying, but consider this. Instead of going out protesting, drawing signs, waiving said automatic weapons, and crying for CNN, I would suggest staying inside and bolting the door. Maybe stop by the grocery and pickup an extra loaf of bread or two. Is this cowardice? No, I think it's good advice if you want to live to waive your weapon another day (pun intended).
Do I think we should demand a recount?!?!?! Absolutely not, it's their deal, let them handle it. I think sanctions can and do work, let the international community decide. Yeah, that may starve a lot of poor little babies, but again, that's their deal. We have plenty of poor little babies to worry about, and they do not have automatic weapons... yet.
Good luck, Ahmedjabbathehutt. You erased a lot of history, like the holocaust and the cold war. I wish those things never happened either. If you can convince your people of that, then maybe you can convince them of anything and blow yourselves up. Again, that's your deal, you handle that.

By the way, if The Professor of Middle Eastern Studies is on Queenzone, here's the exact quote:
"Do you think that this kind of behavior is going to solve any of your problems? It will only make people think you are someone like Bush,"
"You are at the beginning of your way and you are gaining experience, and we do not wish the scandals of the Bush era to be repeated during your term of office," the Iranian leader said.
Um, I don't think he likes Barack either.
Barb: I think it is wise for you to stop replying to my dumb posts.
You've been scoreboarded once again and I didn't need my friend who is a Doctor at Johns Hopkins.
You make it very easy.

"Look, my grandfather and some of his friends had to deal directly with people from her country on a beach in France a long time ago. So I kinda draw the line at a few softballs thrown my way from time to time"

See I've got a different perspective on that because my grandfather on Mum's side was busily bombing my Dad's country while my grandfather on Dad's side was busy in telecommunications... when you're related to both sides in a war you're somewhat compelled to resolve these 'who did what and why' issues.

"And I agree that Mrs. Bad Guy tried to ramshackle this thread with utter nonsense and continues to do so."

It is somewhat vexing, to say the least.

"Do I think we should demand a recount?!?!?! Absolutely not, it's their deal, let them handle it."

Indeed; it's probably not our business, but as an observer I just think a full recount would resolve the matter decisively. If it needs outside assistance to be even remotely reliable, so be it.

"he original topic of this thread was asking if anybody cares about Iran. I have yet to see an answer to that question... a good honest answer. "

Well here's mine; I don't care about Iran any more than I would any other country on the planet when it's in a whole lot of shit. Having said that, I don't believe that any of our nations can just go in and 'fix' things - Look what happens when we try!!! Our so-called civilised nations had to get there on their own; you can't force something like a Western lifestyle on a country; the people have to adopt it themselves, they have to want it. Clearly the average people over there are caught in this conundrum though. They want the choices, freedoms and responsibilities that we've got, but they've still got dictator-style morons that were old hat 50 years ago to choose from.

I guess the hippy in me started this thread because, while I know there's probably nothing anyone can do, it would be nice to see people think about it, and maybe nicer to see a bit of concern for these people. The same concern I had for the violence in Ireland, or a plane crash in the Atlantic, or (and this could invoke a new generation of Godwin's Law) planes being flown into buildings.
I was hoping maybe her Professor would come on here and talk about genetics.

Its ok, Valentine, you must understand Shitbonka and Microwave are the only two authors on this forum that think they give the best answer to any, or all questions on this site.
And remember any similarities between them and human is purely coincidental.
