Surely it was folklore that got us all excited about Let Me Live with Rod Stewart, Play the Game with one of the Gibb Brothers, Brother of Mine and, do I dare say, perhaps even Hangman?

"Let Me Live" is a real song, which eventually appeared on Made In Heaven. I believe the Rod Stewart involvement was officially confirmed in the "Freddie Mercury: In His Own Words" book (can someone verify this?).
"Hangman" was performed live by the band for years, there is no denying its existence. Reports exist of an studio version acetate from the Queen 1 period, though I've not heard this recording, I have no reason to doubt it because the source is reliable.
"Play The Game" is a real song, though a version with Andy Gibb gets bandied around regularly. I don't know anyone who's heard this version and none of the reports feature an actual account or description, so it's quite possible the AG version is a myth. For myself, my notes list it as "possibly a version with Andy Gibb."
I'm all for folklore, but it's only useful when it's based on FACT. When compiling my notes on demos/unreleased tracks, I make specific note of the source of the alledged track's identification and if its authenticity is murky, I list it as "possibly" or "unconfirmed". And I'm regularly revising my notes as new facts come to light.

"Brother Of Mine"?
"Friends In Pain"?
I classify these as rumours. I've tried numerous times to follow the trail of when accounts of songs like this first appear and the trail goes cold in 2008. There's no original attribute either, no one saying: "yeah, they confirmed it at a a Fan Club Con" or "Brian mentioned it in an interview!" These song titles appear out of the blue, with a tag line like "from a reliable source!" without ever naming the source.
"Friends In Pain" seems especially dubious to me because it's a attributed to John "circa 1986". It just reeks of someone looking at "Friends Will Be Friends" and "Pain Is So Close Pleasure" and then thinking that since John started the songs and Freddie finished them, they probably started off as one song and let's call that proto-song "Friends In Pain."
We get reports of songs from places like Fan Club Cons, interviews, books and some are verifiable and some are not. We NEED to remain skeptical. When I hear about a recording or song I've never previously heard about, I demand proof. Cite an original source, people.
If you have a copy, post an excerpt (or the whole thing :-).
If you heard it at a Fan Club Con, there should be several independant witnesses posting the same thing. Many people should have heard it too.
If it's in a book, name the book.
If it's in an interview, post a transcript with details of the interview: who conducted it? was it TV, Radio, online? give us dates and times. Was it an old interview you read in a magazine? Again, give us dates.
The fewer details I get, the more skeptical I become.
And remember, we have been wrong in the past about demos and unreleased tracks, about who recorded them and when! That should make us more vigilant, not more blind to need to believe that the vault is a treasure trove unreleased wonders. More than likely, there are far fewer tracks in any state of relative completeness sitting in the vaults than we would like. What we're probably going to find is similar to what appeared in the FM Solo Collection: outtakes and demos of existing songs, a few fragments of incomplete ideas and not much more.

So, according to Pim (who surely MUST BE JOKING) basically Queen fully recorded Two Worlds Apart and DID NOT include it in their album; somewhere between their 3rd and 4th single release off that album they decided to Release it as a single, even to the point of assigning a catalog number to it, AND THEN decided against it??
Isn't it weird that there is no proof of this track's existence when it was (allegedly) ALMOST RELEASED as a single?
There is a process involved, you know? Tracks get written, arranged, recorded, mastered, put on vinyl, the vinyl is put on cardboard/paper sleeves, shipped to stores, sold, withdrawn, etc.
EACH step of the process leaves SOME evidence, a trail: a piece of paper with the lyrics/chords, some kind of recording (multitracks, demo cassette tape, acetates), actual vinyl records test pressed, cardboard/paper print proofs, newspaper/magazine ads, etc.
For Pim's claims to be true (TWA lined up for single release) there would have to be TONS of evidence.
Theoretically, the track might have existed as an idea in its writer's mind, an unrecorded jam session, a demo recording, etc., but THERE IS NO WAY IT GOT TO THE POINT TO BE CONSIDERED FOR A SINGLE RELEASE.

Maybe Greg Brooks can confirm the Two Worlds Apart story?
