If I remember correct this particular pic of those boxes of tape was explained on Brian May's site. Brian said those boxes were the multitrack tapes (audio) that were send to Justin Shirley Smith to take of the Song 'Under Pressure' for the under pressure '99 single that came out in Holland with a live version mix of UP in Knebworth.

It's also Freddie's Steinway on the left.

SirGH changed the image, originally it linked to something else :-)
What a rotter! ;)

Haha !  Sorry about that guys.  I've changed it back.  So what's the final word on the pic then?  It's 1990?

Good question, but I must admit I think it's 1990

What a day that was.

I was in the Royal Navy at the time and was at sea on HMS Intrepid in the Caribbean when the UK Magic Tour tickets went on sale. I was panicking that I’d miss out so I called my Mum on the ship’s Rad Phone and she got in touch with Jacky at the fan club who kindly sent me tickets for Wembley (1st night). I still have her hand written note somewhere that says “well, we couldn’t let a sailor boy down could we?”. Quite funny. That wouldn’t happen now in the age of internet ticket sales! I’m pretty sure I got the Knebworth tickets myself when I returned from sea but I could be wrong.

As for Knebworth, I have a few personal memories. I drove North from Portsmouth to Lancashire on the Friday evening, got up early on Saturday, collected three friends and we headed off for Knebworth. I too remember the poor toilet facilities and joined the line of people who chose to whizz against the nearby fence; much more pleasurable than using the trench! We were quite near the front, close to the large tree which was to the right of the stage. Even from there it took me well over an hour to get to the toilet (fence) and back; why I didn’t just use a large bottle I’ll never know. I remember the helicopter arriving as I was trying to get through the crowd.

The gig itself was immense and although not my personal favourite from the times I saw Queen (Leeds 82 or NEC 84 would be top of the list), it was a true spectacle and of course it turned out to be Freddie’s final farewell. If everybody in the audience had known that then, I can’t imagine what the already charged atmosphere would have been like.  I remember looking back during Radio Ga Ga and seeing the vast sea of hands clapping in unison. The crowd was so big, it looked like a wave because of the time delay. As others have noted, it took us over 4 hours to get out of the car park. Because of the long drive the night before and the early start , I was really suffering and fell asleep at the wheel a few times on the M1. My friend in the passenger seat next to me still has nightmares about that journey. I also missed my turn off on the M1 and we ended up on Snake Pass at 6am on the Sunday morning. It was drenched in thick fog which only made the journey worse. We got back to Lytham at around 7:30am, totally exhausted. I remember waking up and being told that my girlfriend had called, worrying because she had heard on the national news that someone had been stabbed in the crowd during Quo’s (?) set. I believe that, sadly, the person died.

Apologies if my persoanl memories are a little boring to others but I thought I may as well share them.

Cheers,

Keith.

Nice stories which make me sad that I wasn't born in the 1970's in UK

Does anybody here collect Status Quo bootlegs, or do you know a site similar to Queenzone ?

I'm on a good way of getting a copy of the Big Country performance, so it would be nice to have also the Status Quo concert. I have e-mailed a couple of people who I found with google, but got no replies yet :-( Any tips ?

Working as I do at Knebworth House (and just having worked closely with Jacky Smith of the Official Queen International Fan Club to mount the Queen Live Magic exhibition of memorabilia at Knebworth until 31st August 2010 - you must visit! - see the fabled yellow jacket and white red/gold stripe trousers as well as Brian, Roger and John clothing, etc, etc) I can state categorically that the photo is DEFINITELY at Knebworth and definitely NOT 1986.

Hi is there any chance of putting it up for download as a mp3 then. what i am doing is trying to get all or as much as i can from Knebworth 1986 as this was a big day for all queen fans ,so i can put together a package of the day. i am in talks with somebody over the status quo part and should get a copy of that. When all parts are together im planing on uploading the whole Knebworth experiance for all to re-live again. I also intend to put a small picture section together as well. so if theres any chance of uploading i would be very gratful. regards peter
